Book Description

(Jessica Kingsley) Cookbook contains more than 400 gluten- and dairy-free recipes, for those whose diet is restricted due to food intolerances. Softcover.

About the Author

Marilyn Le Breton is the mother of two sons, one of whom is autistic and has benefited considerably from a gluten and casein free diet.

Allergy induced Autism is a U.K. based charity dedicated to identifying the underlying causes and biochemical effects of autistic spectrum disorders. Since gaining charitable status in 1997, AiA has gone from strength to strength with an explosion in membership. International seminars, presentations and conferences have served to heighten awareness of the condition, providing a platform for medical research and a focal point for scientists, clinicians and parents.

This is basically a collation of user-submitted recipes from a British web forum on the GFCF diet. There are definitely a few useful recipes in there, but they're not consistent--half use American measurements (cups and Tablespoons) and half use British (grams and ounces.) It's not impossible to convert the measurements yourself to whichever one you need, but it is an added step. In addition, there seems to have been very little thought given to culling and selecting the best recipes from the group. There are, for example, three separate "goulash" recipes which vary their measurements and ingredients a bit, but are certainly not different enough to consider each one a new dish. It leads one to believe they were either looking to fill pages or didn't want to offend anyone in this group effort. And, as with most gluten-free cookbooks, there is a large imbalance towards recipes for baked goods. These are important to know how to make, certainly, but this book will not answer the question "what can I serve for dinner?" nearly as well as some of the other GFCF cookbooks available. There is some redemption to be found in the candy-making section of the book, as well as the non-food-items section, both of which provide recipes that cannot easily be found elsewhere, but overall I would say the book is overpriced for the content it provides.

3.0 out of 5 stars fourty dollars?, Feb 11 2010

When I purchased this book, it didn't have the option of "look inside". Being at least double the price of most cookbooks, I had to assume it had science in the book that linked food and autism symptoms. Possibly explaining what was up between the two. No science. There are 3 pages on tips for traveling with an allergic child. This is a cookbook only. It has several different recipe donors which I like. Therefore, several recipes have more than one option for the "same" recipe. There are 3 different peanut butter cookie recipe choices, 2 for cornbread. There are 3 recipes for play doe, 1 for bubbles,3 for clay. I was surprised that the book was not written more allergy friendly. Like, one cookie recipe with out corn, one with out eggs, ect, going through the top 10 allergies. The recipes have two letter codes that tell you it is corn free, egg free, but...... I can read the recipe and figure that out my self. There are 7 categories of initials to inform the reader what is not in the recipe. They include, corn, egg, fruit, soy, sugar, tomato, yeast.

All recipes are simple and quick. Some unique entrys are for pita bread that puffs, a microwave bread, some yeast free breads, including flat bread, condiments:mayo, non soy soy sauce.

I expected so much more because it's forty dollars. I am disappointed. however there are about six entries I will use. This book could have been so much better, personally, I would get two or three other gluten free dairy free or cooking for allergies books, or gluten free vegan books for this price, and have more alternatives. If this book were fifteen dollars, I would feel differently, but would still be disappointed about lack of data about GF CF diet for Autism since the book has AiA on the cover.
