Sixty Years of Quality Sound, Sixty Years of AKG Expertise

For more than 60 years, AKG microphones and headsets have been synonymous with professional audio excellence. Since it was founded in 1947, AKG has been passionately delivering superior-sounding, cutting-edge products. Within months of the company’s founding, its microphones were being used by radio stations, theaters and jazz clubs. A mere two years later, AKG headphones were introduced to the marketplace.

AKG products quickly established a reputation for superior performance, and many musical artists started relying on them when it came to performing and recording. World-renowned artists used AKG products back in the 50s, while many of today’s most recognized artists swear by AKG products for live concerts and studio recording.

More than 60 years and 1500 patents later, AKG continues to create innovative and exceptional-sounding products for both professional and personal use. So it stands to reason that the AKG K172 high definition over-ear headphones deliver outstanding performance, unparalleled comfort and unmatched reliability. Choose the brand that the pros have chosen for so many years. They’re also designed for high output with minimum distortion, and engineered to play loud and long with no sound leakage, making them the ultimate upgrade for both DJs and audiophiles who listen in mobile environments. You get all of the sound and none of the noise.

Ultra-soft ear pads and self-adjusting headband make wearing these a dream

High Quality Materials Create High-Definition Sound

Extra-large speakers with Varimotion diaphragms provide higher sensitivity and a wider dynamic range. Varimotion is the first technique that allows the production of a microphone diaphragm whose thickness varies along its diameter. This provides better control of the capsule resonance, reducing the need for expensive mechanical tuning resonators in the shaft to a minimum. Varimotion diaphragms can vibrate freely, providing a much crisper, cleaner sound than conventional designs.

For the finest possible transmission of their wide frequency response, the K 172 HDs use a single-sided, 99%-oxygen-free cable. The hard gold-plated jack plug and contacts resist corrosion and enhance sound clarity.

Reliable Compatibility

You can use the K 172 HDs with your home stereo, portable DVD, CD and MP3 players and many other audio/video players. With their slim, tapered connector, the K172 HDs are compatible with all versions of the iPhone including first generation mode They’re an ideal upgrade to any portable device.

I read the specs, view reviews before I chose this headphone because I'm picky and I listen to music a lot; music is life, my girlfriend also said that. So I'm happy to pay more than a hundred bucks for a headphone. Overall, I think this one is ok. It's great if you listen to vocal, R&B, jazz, ... but for heavy bass music like dance, rock, or even classical, I don’t think its bass is good enough. Someone said its bass is concentrated not “blur”, I agree, but somehow it’s weak to me. I think I need an amplifier. I think about it.

Fantastic sound quality, but don't expect loudness from an ipod/iphone! June 1 2011
By jackccamp - Published on
Okay, both the description and the AKG website say that these headphones are suitable/ loud enough for portable players like iPods and iPhones. THIS IS WRONG! You can get solid volume when turned up all the way, in the silence of your home. But that's it. These headphones, although not a good solution for portable players, offer fantastic sound quality, with great instrument separation. The bass is lesser than many headphones, but that's a matter of personal preference. Anyway, these headphones are simply not loud enough and their shape and size is not ideal for bringing them places. Also, the on ear version (the ones I'm reviewing) clamp pretty seriously on your head after about half an hour of listening. However, after you break in the awesome velvet ear pads, the clamping force isn't nearly as bad and they become extremely comfy.
Also, this review was about using UNAMPED porable players.
All in all, great headphones, just not for an un amped iPod.

Great ! Sept. 7 2009

These have excellent sound quality just the way AKG is known for.
High treble and thumping bass. Personally I think this particular set of headphones have better sound quality than the Bose headphones, which I have used before.
It doesn't use noise-cancelling technology but cuts out most of ambient noise so it should work very well in noisy environments as well.

Love the sound, ears kinda hurt though June 1 2012

I've never had high acoustic quality headphones before so when these went down to less than $80 bucks I risked it. So glad I did. I use them with my Marantz receiver/Teac CD player and my iPhone. The sound is amazing compared to my over the ear Sony's and my Philips in ear headphones. I've tried them with a variety of genres and every mp3 and cd is like listening to them anew. Theres a sense of depth and nuances that just blossoms. I'm also glad that they're not bass heavy as so many of the ones I've tried are. I noticed the vocal range seemed just a bit light even though it's very clear. It might just be a matter of my brain adapting to the new stimulus. Still the quality of sound reproduction is quite impressive to this non-audiophile. My only real complaint is that after a hour my ear cartilage starts hurting a bit and I don't think my head is particularly large lol. I'm hoping that as they losen up this will improve. Please note these do not have an in line volume adjuster, I only say that because a lot of people look for that, not because these headphones were advertised as such.

We bought these a year ago and my sons and all their friends are definitely impressed. They primarily use them with their iPhones. One friend said he though they could use a little more bass, but I'm going to stick with a 5-star rating. We would definitely buy these again and highly recommend them to anyone considering purchasing these.
