5.0 out of 5 stars Great automatic "Master" switch, April 9 2010
By Reviewer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: APC P7GB 7 Outlets/120V Power-Saving Essential SurgeArrest (Electronics)
This power strip has three different types of outlets, bunch of LED lights, and two switches. It could be a little confusing at first to a non-techie person, so let my review be an explanation of how this works.

How is this kind of power strip better than a simple surge protector strip?

Suppose you have a computer (laptop or desktop) with a bunch of stuff hooked up to it: a scanner, a monitor or two, a printer or two, amplified speakers, USB hub, and each of these gadgets is plugged into the power outlet.

At the end of working on your computer you simply turn it off and usually leave all the gadgetry plugged in. Most of those items will go to a standby or "sleep" mode. But they still draw some electric current - it is not much, but it goes on for 24/7 and is completely unnecessary. It would be nice if your secretary would unplug every item for you and then plug them all back in at the beginning of new day. But you don't have a secretary, or have one who doesn't care - and that's where the APC P7Gb master controlled strip comes really handy - it will turn on or off everything for you whenever you turn on or off your computer.

The strip has three different types of outlets: regular, "Master," and "Controlled" (by the Master, of course). The regular outlets supply power all the time - that's where the cable modem and your desk lamp stay plugged in. The single Master outlet is where your computer is connected. This outlet has sensing circuitry that "knows" whether you draw very low current (PC off) or higher current (PC on) and it controls a relay that switches on and off the power to the remaining "Controlled" outlets.

So, all the stuff that can be unplugged while your computer is off should be hooked up to the "Controlled" outlets.

There are two switches in the power strip. The main switch overrides the control and a little switch on the side is for selection between desktop or laptop computer.

The strip is intended mainly for use with computers while I use it with my audio: the "Master" amplifier controls power to CD player.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheap, Turns off accessories, April 19 2011

I bought it to turn off the accessories of my kids' computer, since they never remember to turn them off themselves. Works exactly as it should. Even has a sensitivity switch, though the desktop connected to it tripped it properly in standby on either setting. APC has long been my go-to brand for anything surge/UPS, and this has kept up the reputation with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for light home theater systems, but with some caveats, April 29 2012

I also own a Belkin Conserve, which works just as well as the APC P7GB. I purchased this product I need three always-on outlets than the Belkin's two. Plus, I don't have a lot of devices that need to be controlled, namely a game system, a subwoofer, and a Bluetooth audio adapter.

As with the Belkin Conserve, some electronic devices need to be on the always-on outlets if you're like me and use a Logitech Harmony remote. Otherwise, the devices will not turn on all the time like my Blu-ray player, or switch TV inputs. It's not a big deal for me anyway, because many of my devices use very little standby power anyway.

What's nice about the APC P7GB is that it has LEDs letting you know which set of devices are powered on, whether it be the always-on outlets, the master, or the controlled outlets. Of course, the disadvantage is that they have the potential to light up a very dark room.

On the side of the surge protector, there is a selector switch that will toggle between a PC/Laptop mode or a Netbook mode. I can assure that while it may have been meant for a computer systems, it will function fine in a light home theater setup. I simply left it switched on the PC/Laptop mode. I don't know what will happen if I toggled the Netbook mode.

Obviously, the surge protector is not AC adapter-friendly. You may need to buy cord extenders or check out other green surge protectors.

As an environmental bonus, all the packaging is recyclable, plastic and all. However, it appeared cracked when I received it.
