Great notebook setup but !!!!,

This notebook has a really great setup for its size. Intels core i7 with nvidia 335M for a 14 inch laptop is really awsome for the price. The things I didnt like about it: less than 1 hours battery life, overheats all the time and lots of blue screens (memory dump) probably because of the dedicated video card (nvidia's driver crashes all the time and than blue screen). I had to return it because of the blue screen problem. My school fellow workers each baught one and SAME PROBLEM (on 3 computers baught 2 of them crashes) so I really dont recomend this computer to anyone unless its going to be revised !

Pretty good deal, quite like the computer. Impressed with the features and speed of this computerPros: - fast i7 processor for a good price - 14 inches good mix of portability and not too small - impressed with windows 7 OS - lot of people say they don't like the keyboard, but I actually think its quite good Cons: - battery life not that great (about 2 hours of taking notes and using internet with brightness lowered) - bit of bloatware

Had the laptop for two weeks and it started to blue screen, shutdown, and pixelate on a clean factory system. The wife called and ASUS tech support asked her to run a virus scan. She told them a full scan ran the previous night and nothing was detected. They told her to call back when the crashes occur again. What?When it crashed for a four time I ran some diagnostics (memtest, SMART, SpeedFan, and windbg for the dump log) and found the issue was related to video (but more likely an overall heating issue). Found that the 720QM is a hot little puppy and hard to cool in a laptop. Sent the laptop to ASUS and they had it for 2 weeks. No customer contact or update on their RMA status check for the entire duration. After we got the laptop back (now with a new motherboard) it still runs very hot (cannot have this on your lap and the left side of the palm rest gets to 115F after 15 minutes of watching a show on Hulu). Oh, I forgot to mention that the first boot after since RMA return we had to call ASUS back. Since the motherboard was replaced our Windows 7 product code was no longer valid. I called ASUS and they wanted us to ship the laptop back. I instead called MS following the activation suggestions and MS got me back on track without a hassle. I also decided to burn the five recovery DVDs to make sure I have a recovery option. Well, the second DVD write fails on several types of DVD brands. Don't rely on ASUS for recovery media. Use Ghost, Windows Backup, and/or Clonezilla for your recovery options. Overall: the laptop is fast, the graphics are good (not great) for newer games, the heat is a serious issue, and tech support is not very helpful. I would recommend an Core i5 that comes with optimus technology instead of a model with Core i7. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful

Pros:1. Price, Price, Price. 2. Performance 3. USB 3.0 and eSATA 4. Size Cons: If taken into context with the price none, however: 1. narrow viewing angle 2. poor battery life(barely over an hour with heavy browsing). 3. potential for only 3 usb slots (the esata and usb3.0 sots can be used as usb slots) 4. bloatware 5. quirky mouse This is my second Asus. I bought this computer for my office. I was looking for a reliable budget unit with power, appearance was not a priority. This laptop is suprisingly pleasing to the eye. The keyboard is right on for my medium sized hands. The buttons have a good springy feel to them without feeling cheap. It runs hot because of the i7 but its not noisy. The temperature runs between the low 50 to upper 70's with usage so I would keep that vent unblocked. The power cord could have had better placement. It inserts in a hole on the right side close to the rear and it's j shaped. Performance, thanks to 4GB of RAM and the quad core processor does not dissapoint at ALL. You just make sure those vents are unblocked to keep the air flowing and throw what ever task you want at it. For fun: I took out the cdrom and bought a hardrive $44 caddy from newmodeus.com and added a second hardrive using an old one I had laying around. I moved the page file to the second drive for better performance. I then bought a $9 slim CDrom SATA enclosure from amazon to use the CDrom as an external drive. I also upgraded the wifi to $44 Intel Ultimate N 633ANHMW chip to more than double my wifi speed. In the future I plan to replace the main drive with $168 ssd. So for $265 and some time with a screwdriver you get a world class laptop. Even the screen can be replaced for $100 and some change. All that backed by the reliability of Asus (albeit with a voided warranty :). 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful

After reading the reviews on amazon and googling all review/youtube sites, I decided to get this laptop. When i opened the box, I was getting awed at first. The laptop is nice itself and looks better in your hand then in the picture. It was a little on the heavy side for the size of the laptop. I started it up and was setting it up for use at work. After about 15 minutes the heat was ok. Then 30 mins into my installs of new programs, the laptop vent was super hot. It felt like an oven on the right side. I read the reviews about the heat, but this is very hot. I had a old Dell inspiron that had a superhot battery back then was nothing compared to how hot this Asus became. I had a HP i am borrowing about 1 feet away and it started to get superhot because of the Asus exhaust port on the side. After about an hour usage, I decided to return it because I was getting a headache because of all the heat coming out of it. I cannot judge how it performs because i has in the infant stages of setting it up. I would suggest if you do not want to deal with the heat from his laptop, you should get one beside this one. I know Asus makes good laptops, but this is not one of them.
