2.0 out of 5 stars Great Device with One Huge & Glaring Flaw, Jan 8 2011

First off, there is much to like about the ASUS O!Play and I actually prefer its GUI and features slightly over the WDTV Live and Live Plus. I find it easier to use, its networking is seamless and best of all, it includes a Sleep Timer, which is great for kids, and for the late-night viewing in the bedroom.

Unfortunately, both the O!Play R1 and Air R3 have a glaring flaw - these cannot play the latest MKV files (with header compression) created using the newest version of the encoders. This is a major issue that has been discussed to death on the ASUS Support Forums, but 10 months later, we still have not received a firmware update (and according to ASUS, we may never get one), while WD has since updated their Live and Live Plus media players. Right now, my O!Play is virtually unusable (I call it "The Brick"), while my WDTV Live and Live Plus players run newer MKV files like a charm.

This level of non-support from ASUS has caused me to totally reevaluate my future buying, and instead of stocking up on O!Play media players when I bought more HDTVs, I instead went with Western Digital, as their better support has kept me as a customer. I would recommend staying far away from ASUS unless you like seeing your media player turn into a doorstop with every new MKV update.

This media player is great! It was easy to connect and has a great interface. I like the preview window for previewing movies before i commit to watching them. Very quick loading and unlike watching a burnt movie on my dvd player, this thing plays everything. Any format! I would recommend this player to anyone!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid HD Media Player, Feb 19 2010

This device plays everything! I actually haven't found a codec that it won't play. The only drawback is the super crappy user interface. It works, it just looks really weak. MKV play back is really good and the remote fits nicely in your hand. This device would be perfect if you could load "Plex", "XBMC" or "Boxee" on to the box.
