Almost perfect,

This review is from: ASUS SL101-A1-BR Slider 10.1-Inch Eee Pad 1GB DDR2, 16GB Flash Tablet (Mocha) (Personal Computers)
I've had this tablet for a few months now and have to say it'd amazing. My 14 month old loves to play with it and it stands up very well to her slobbering and pawing. The one negative comment I would make is the sound quality. It's not bad, it's terrible. The highest volume is so low that unless you are in some sort of perfect lab setup you are gonna have to invest in some headphones. As a comparison, I would say that the Ipad 2 is at least twice as loud.

This review is from: ASUS SL101-A1-BR Slider 10.1-Inch Eee Pad 1GB DDR2, 16GB Flash Tablet (Mocha) (Personal Computers)
Here is a brief outline of my inital thoughts on this unit (updated after two days usage):1. Fit and finish - fantastic. 2. Screen - perfect for a ten inch format. 3. Keyboard - I did not get to see the slider before purchase, so I was a little underwhelmed with the keyboard. As I should have realized, it is small; only as wide as the unit. Typing is obviously harder than a full size keyboard, but I have been able to adapt to it after only 4 hours. Just understand that the keyboard is VASTLY BETTER than any on screen keyboard. I have not tried but it is possible to plug in a usb keyboard or mouse. 4. Operating System - Android 3.1 ships, but it updates to 3.2 immediately. I am fairly new with Android so I can't really comment, except it seems good. 5. Battery life - The unit is supposed to last 7-8 hours. My first days use got about 5.5hours at 13% remaining. Also, the charging cord is fairly short. [update after a month: has not repeated] Last night (my second charge), the tablet would not recognize the charger was on. No other USB device I plugged into the charger would indicate it was working either. i was about ready to give up, when the laptop suddenly indicated charging status. I will report back if something develops on this. I am also curious if plugging tablet into another powered USB device will operate or charge the tablet?? 6. Screen touch functionality - seems great. 7. Polaris Office - seem good for the tablet. Provides text editing, spreadsheet and presentations. 8. Sound - Quality seems ok, volume is poor. Count on using your earphones. 9. Video - Flash is provided so Youtube runs fine. Have not tried anything else. I am disappointed there is no netflix app yet for the tablet. Amazon's Video on Demand plays very well. 10. Wifi - range and connection performance and functionality good. 11. GPS - I have not done a scientific test, but GPS seems to take a longer than my Android phone. Google maps is amazing as always. [update: The GPS on my phone gets a fix far faster than on the Slider] My overall feeling about this tablet is extremely positive. I ordered the 16GB Slider off Amazon's seller CircuitCity and received as promised in perfect shape. Update after one month: 1. I connected a USB keyboard, which worked great. The tablet kept up with fast entry. 2. I connected a USB mouse, which worked as expected, manipulating the screen in place of a touch interface. 3. This tablet has a mini HDMI female jack, so you will need a male mini HDMI adaptor or cable. Using the adaptor, I connected the tablet to my tv. Audio and video were great. Amazon sells the mini adaptor for a very good price. 4. I looked at an Asus Transformer in a retail store. The keyboard is admittedly easier to use, however, the combined weight of the keyboard puts it into netbook country. 5. The tablet continues to exceed my expectations. I am eager to see Ice Cream Sandwich run on the tablet! 26 of 26 people found the following review helpful

Smaller than I expected,

This review is from: ASUS SL101-A1-BR Slider 10.1-Inch Eee Pad 1GB DDR2, 16GB Flash Tablet (Mocha) (Personal Computers)
I did research, watching lots of online video reviews of this new Asus Eee Pad Slider, but until I took a chance on it and actually ordered one from Amazon for myself I could not know that it's surprising small considering it's functionality with a built in keyboard. I was expecting a much larger tablet. While not nearly as small as my Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Eee Pad Slider is more useful as I had to spend yet more money on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Samsung keyboard dock that's really a desktop option only, and it doesn't type any better for me than the Eee Pad Sliders keyboard. The size compares to my Acer Iconia a500, a bit thicker, but the form factor feels much better. Aside from size, my biggest concern prior to purchase was the rather extreme screen tilt, but the 178° viewing angle makes that a non-issue, and having that great of a viewing angle gives it a real advantage over most other tablets. Also, that extreme screen tilt helps eliminate glare. Basically, you can buy thinner tablets and then start investing more in cover stands to make them functional and always wish you had a keyboard which will cost you even more money, or this very high quality, innovative Eee Pad Slider does it all out of the box. 10" tablets are not easy to type on, having a built in keyboard really makes this tablet usable, much more usable than my very thin Galaxy Tab 10.1. The Eee Pad Slider takes the tablet concept from neat gadget to functional tool. I went with the Eee Pad Slider 16GB version plus ordered a SanDisk 32GB MicroSD card for $40, saved myself $60 from the 32GB Eee Pad Slider version and now have a dedicated removable 32GB for music, photos, and videos just like on my phone, can't have that option with the Galaxy Tab 10.1. PROS: - Very nice built in keyboard that functions very smoothly - Nice form factor, feels and looks surprisingly small - Well-built all over, rubberized back has a great feel - 178° viewing angle is really nice - Speedy performance - Mini HDMI port - Very high quality display protected by Gorilla Glass - Very smooth and responsive touch display - MicroSD card slot - Full size USB port - Compact USB wall charger with flip out plug - 5 megapixel rear camera - Pretty stock version of Android Honeycomb, refreshing coming from the Galaxy Tab 10.1 CONS: - Screen tilt does require you to get a bit closer to the front facing camera for video chat - Sreen angle not adjustable - No flash for rear camera - Asus supplied USB power cable is too shot, but so is the Galaxy Tabs - Would have been nice to include a case/sleeve 27 of 28 people found the following review helpful

Okay, maybe almost perfect. I do wish it were faster but that's because I just got the obscenely fast Epic Touch (Samsung Galaxy S2) and everything else seems slow in comparison. That said, this is a great device, and already I find myself using it 10x more than my iPad. Why? I don't just browse sites. When I go online, I'm always commenting, reviewing, tagging, emailing, chatting, etc. I am an interactive user and I absolutely cannot stand typing on virtual keyboards. And trust me it's not for lack of trying. I've repeatedly tried to tell myself I'd get used to it but really, virtual keyboards are an exercise in frustration (particularly when trying to type out passwords!!!) I know this isn't the greatest keyboard in the world but it's pretty amazing for an always-attached input method that disappears when you slide it away. This is the best form factor yet for a tablet imo and major props to ASUS for getting it right. |
