First Canadian review? About time!TL;DR Look & Style: 9/10 Feel & Weight: 9/10 Keyboard: 9/10 Touchpad: 4/10 Webcam: 6/10 Sound: 5/10 LCD: 10/10 Battery Life: 10/10 OEM Operating System: 0/10 Review: Look: This laptop looks absolutely amazing! It's sleek, stylish, shiny, and the ASUS logo on the front draws eyes. The bamboo finish is unique and refreshing, giving you a nice feeling whenever you grab your 'not grey/black' laptop. The only two complaints about the look is that: All of the surfaces collect fingerprints, and the metallic surfaces actually collect oil from your fingers and hands giving a multicoloured 'oil spill' sort of shine. Weight: The U43 is super light and very comfortable to carry even without a case. No complaints here at all. Keyboard: Absolutely amazing once you get used to it. There is very little travelling distance, so typing is very quick and efficient. THE LEFT SHIFT KEY IS FULL for ONCE on a laptop in Canada, this was the selling feature of this laptop for me! Only complaint is the constant fn + insert for the number pad, but that isn't a very big deal. Touchpad: Iffy deal here. It's good, responsive, smooth, and an all around good pad. But you'll find that an excess use will actually give you friction burns on your fingers. I would suggest an external USB mouse for home use. Webcam: High resolution but the light sensors must be on crack because it is constantly recalibrating the light. (Going from black to normal lighting every 20 seconds or so) Sound: Failing point of the laptop. The speakers are very poor quality, and if you use the default drivers for the audio you will get a constant static sound through your headphones and speakers. If the default drivers are uninstalled the static is almost completely removed, but the electrical interference of other parts of the computer still puts the regular noise through. (Only noticeable with HQ headphones.) LCD: Woot! Crystal clear, all the way! Very high quality LCD, and contrary to my original belief the resolution is more than enough to satisfy! Full 720P moves can be played back and watch natively. (Note that 1080P videos can be played but must be outputted onto a larger screen.) Battery Life: Straight up amazing. Without a doubt the highest quality laptop vs. battery life money can buy, excluding those macs. The shortest amount of time I got was around 1 hour 30 minutes, when I had the computer set incorrectly for unplugged use, and was watching a moving on an external monitor. The longest time I've gotten was around 8 hours 30 minutes, on almost full battery saving, with random hibernations and brightness changes throughout the day. Way more than enough to finish a day of school. OEM Operating System: NO. Download yourself a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, and install a completely fresh version of windows. (USE THE PRODUCT KEY ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LAPTOP! THIS MAKES IT LEGAL!) Before doing this, make sure you go through the driver support section of ASUS and download all the drivers that you need to make it work. The easier way of going about this would be to uninstall almost everything off of the laptop, and then running through a whole pile of system cleanup activities. Depending on your experience in the computer world, pick the method easiest for you. Conclusion: Buy this Laptop. (Until mid 2011 or so) It's awesome! It easily replaced my high end gaming 1920x1200 24" PC, and I'm very happy with it! (PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT A GAMING COMPUTER. But it will play the Source Engine games easily, and will even play Mirror's Edge level games at average settings.) I hope you have found my review useful!

Lots of potential but too many annoying issues,

Here is how I would summarize this, after owning it for 2 weeks:PROS: 1. Very fast for what I needed. I run lots of applications at once, related to programming. 2. Decent gaming machine. I play older FPS games, and this runs perfect. 3. The Optimus technology is pretty cool, the way it helps extend battery life but there is a draw back (see below). 4. Beautiful to look at. 5. Beautiful to touch (the palm rests are smooth as silk), but see CONS. CONS: 1. The trackpad is horrible. Yes you can configure it with the ELAN interface, which helped a lot. I no longer need to use the mouse button which takes GFORCE pressure to engage (slight exaggeration but super annoying still). Dragging and Dropping with the hardware button is a feat in itself. 2. Speakers are under the palm rests so your hands are vibrating like crazy when listening to anything while typing. 3. Speakers are also very low quality it appears. I get a lot of snapping and popping when playing at 80%+ volume. 4. The body of the laptop around the lower right corner, around the cd tray, is very weak. 5. The body around the top of the screen is weak, although not a big deal. 6. After using it, the palm rest and touch pad look like a greasy frying pan because it picks up and retains the oil from your skin so easy. 7. Major CON with Optimus tech is it uses the windows 7 api to enable the hybrid video switching. So don't expect to get this working under Linux any time soon, or any other OS. If you like win 7, which I have discovered that I do (after using Linux for so long), then this is not a problem. I will be returning this laptop, unfortunately. This was my first laptop purchase outside of Dell's XPS line and I had high expectations of Asus after reviewing their products so much. Dell just announced a new XPS lineup, so I'll be going back to them. In closing I would say if you plan on using windows 7, with an external mouse and will stick to headphones or external speakers, then you will probably enjoy this laptop. Otherwise, stay away.

Asus is solid,

I spent a lot of time in product comparison. Leaders were Lenova, Dell, HP. I finally looked at the Asus because I am familiar with the great quality of their motherboards, and other companies tend to go with the lowest bid on internals so can vary in quality even in the same model. Asus does not compromise on their basics.My criteria was as follows: Under 5 lbs, performant in my industry, which is software development (and a resource hog), long battery life, and still enough bells and whistles to suffice as a decent recreational machine. Basically I wanted a portable desktop quality laptop - under five lbs. Not easy to find. I was really pleasantly surprised with the Asus. The bamboo casing is not only totally beautiful, but environmentally friendly as well (bonus.). It tops out just under five lbs, with internal DVD player, decently large hard drive and long battery life. Decent sound system and graphics, 4 gigs of RAM standard, windows 7, 64 bit; the fast boot Asus OS for secure web access and immediate application access is a nifty unexpected bonus. Battery life is more than decent - its never what they claim unless you devote your life to battery maintenance... I experienced around 7 hrs using windows 7. You only get ten if you never boot past the Asus fast OS. But 7 is really good by industry standards. Enough to travel to most European Countries before needing to charge. The Asus is not configurable - it is what it is. However, chip and drive speed are very competitive. The only option I missed is a solid state hard drive. The Lenova offered this, but with the price difference and all other things equal or better with the Asus - I chose to live without solid state drive. I highly recommend this laptop for serious users who want as much as possible of "everything". Even with unlimited budget, at some point you have to say - OK - what is the cost of "everything"... The ASUS Bamboo Collection delivers as close to everything as discriminating users could want at a good price.
