This little laptop performs pretty much as advertised - which is a good thing. It's light and portable, the battery life is very good and the cost is pretty reasonable. The screen is very crisp and readable in most lighting situations, thought the hi-gloss surface can be rather reflective if you are out-of-doors or with light coming from behind. Off-angle viewing isn't wonderful, but then you expect to have a laptop right in front of you, so this isn't really an issue. I find the keyboard just fine, while the touch pad takes a bit of getting used to - it can be a bit 'touchy' and I find a 'real' mouse to be helpful with any task that requires complicated cut-and-paste operations or precise pointing.

Speed isn't remarkable, but this is due to the use of a relatively slow 'ultra-low-voltage' processor which, of course, contributes to the extra battery life. It's certainly fast enough for most real-life apps (though it might bog down with some fantasy-life games). Appearance is crisp and professional, although the high-gloss black plastic finish can show fingerprints. Overall, it feels light, rather than solidly luxurious like, say, a MacBook Pro, but I would certainly not classify it as flimsy. Overall, you can tell that the ASUS engineers were aiming for portability, convenience and affordability. I think they succeeded on all counts. If this is what you are looking for, the UL30A should make you happy!

If you buy one, I suggest that you also consider:
- a mouse - USB or wireless
- an optical drive - movies show well, so enjoy the convenience of playing your DVD's

I bought the unit from Amazon.ca about a month ago and have had no regrets whatsoever. Yes it is a fingerprint magnet and it does feel a bit plasticky. While not perfect (none is), this Asus ultraportable meets all my criteria very nicely at a very reasonable price: light weight; workable keyboard and touchpad; nice construction; quiet; cool operating temperature; bright and vivid screen with excellent resolution; strong wireless connection, HDMI output; sufficient number of other ports etc.

Aesthetically, the unit looks very sharp with the thin (< 1 inch thickness) all-black body and the brushed aluminum lid.

I know I should mention some of the negatives as well but as a 'half-cup-full' person, I tend to concentrate on the positives. Let's just say that it serves all my purposes (web surfing, emails, video watching and note taking) extremely well and I have yet got hung up on any single negative. Your mileage may vary though, as always.

Last note: with several web-pages open and video streaming at the lowest brightness, I get approximately 6-7 hours out of the battery.

Excellent product! No issues in three years and it's had heavy use. Great battery life and charges quickly, I have other ASUS products and have never had any issue with them.

Just got this laptop, works great, both with the included Win7 H.P. and Ubuntu 9.10. For Ubuntu, there's a slight display glitch that seems to go away when you disable virtualization in the BIOS, the touchpad clink-to-tap can't be disabled (that should be fixed soon) and the wireless works best with a new kernel - that's it. As anyone will tell you when getting a new machine for Linux, these are minor glitches. No issues on the Windows side.

And, I have to say this thing is snappy, feels faster often than my desktops, which I find rather surprising.

In other words, this is a great buy!
