3.0 out of 5 stars A sweet take on the Hades/Persephone myth!, Mar 13 2012
By
This review is from: Abandon (Hardcover)
Meg Cabot will always continue to be one of the wittiest authors on my watch, and that doesn't change with this sweet re-telling of the Hades and Persephone myth!

Although Abandon was a little slow to start, it was such an easy book to fly through in one sitting. I loved how you could never tell exactly where it was going. You just had to sit back and enjoy the ride, which was really refreshing! The only thing I found hard to swallow was how many flashbacks were incorporated in the story because it slowed down the pace.

Our heroine, Pierce, was such a kind, caring, and considerate girl, but I felt like she was made from a mold I'd seen so many times before: shy and a little too selfless. The story was very well-written but I never felt like Pierce's voice shone through and that made it really hard to connect with her. I wanted to see more of the strength that the author implied was there!

But John -- complete with his dark and broodiness that made him a totally swoon-worthy character -- was the perfect love interest for Pierce! Their whole relationship was so incredibly sweet, and near the end, I found myself smiling at their interactions. This may have been a Hades/Persephone re-telling, but they put their own captivating spin on it.

Thoughtful and sweet, Abandon may not have been a favourite, but it was a beautiful start to a bound-to-be enticing trilogy. You should definitely give it a shot! I'm really excited to see where Meg Cabot will take this story with the future installments! :)

BUY or BORROW?: This was more of a borrow read for me, but if you're a Meg Cabot fan or a huge Greek mythology lover, then you might want to look into investing in this book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Take it or leave it., Jan 10 2012

This review is from: Abandon (Hardcover)
At first this book started off great! it was an interesting idea and I was really interested and engaged with this book. Yet as the book progressed it got really confusing with the flashbacks Pierce has, and her time spent with this mysterious stranger (you find out later who he really is). The flashbacks would have been much better if they actually were related to the present day events but they just seemed to be a rehashing of memories. Even so, it feels it's all jumbled and it's makes the reading awkward.

I also had a hard time liking Pierce. She was like a wooden doll with hardly any feeling or form and to be blunt, she just seemed so blah. Nothing exciting at all. I didn't quite understand her relationship with John Hayden. It was like she liked him, but then she steered clear away from him. Although he ends up saving her from several horrible experiences, she just wants to get away from him as if he's the plague. Ok. I supposed there's not a problem with that but if they're supposed to be the romance couple here, the chemistry seems way off and it just feels like it's not there. Even the rules of 'Opposites Attract' does not work here. Pierce just seemed so wishy washy half of the time I ended up not really liking her in the first place.

The plot itself was okay. Although it's supposed to be somewhat similar to the Hades and Persephone myth you don't see much of it except for some parts here and there. Even so, it's does not seem well put and just feels like a cut and paste job, with a lot of fluff in between. It does pick up in the end though, and it's interesting enough for me to wait for the second book, but I am not in a real rush to get it.

I'd say take it or leave it with this one. I have not read Meg Cabot's books before but fans of her might like this book more than I did. Those who want a better rendition of the Hades/Persephone myth, try The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter.

4.0 out of 5 stars A darker Meg Cabot, Jun 11 2011

This review is from: Abandon (Hardcover)
I know there are a crop of books coming out this year with stories based on Greek mythology and Abandon is the first of the ones I've read. Abandon had a darker story and tone whereas with Meg Cabot I'm used to her light, fun reads with lots of humour.

It took me awhile to get into the story because of the slow pacing in the first half of the book but by the second half I was fully invested. The story starts with Pierce Olivera and her mother moving back to her mother's hometown of Isla Huesos looking for a fresh start. Why that is, is a mystery. And its through a series of flashbacks throughout the story that we find out about Pierce's past.

Each flashback shows a bit more about Pierce. She's a little naïve and tends to put herself in dangerous situations. As I'm reading, I can tell that she's doing something foolish and I wanted to shake her and yell at her to stop. She's also become guarded and is obviously afraid of something. That something happens to be John. She wants nothing to do with John but he shows up whenever she's in danger and has saved her on more than one occasion. John is such a mystery. I would've loved to see more of him but I'm sure he will have a bigger part in the second book. It also looks like there's some history between Alex, Pierce's cousin and some of the kids in town. I'm interested to find out what their history and motives might be.

Before reading Abandon, I only knew the basics of the Hades and Persephone myth...actually I don't know much about Greek mythology in general. I appreciated that Meg Cabot focused on character development and world building and I was able to get up to speed about the myth. Overall, I thought Abandon was a good first book and sets up for the things to come. This is another book that Meg Cabot fans will devour. I know I did.
