Book Description

Sep 25 2012
Abbey Road studios have been on the cutting edge of recording for eighty years, hosting some of the biggest names in music over the decades: the Beatles, of course, who immortalized it with the title of their 1969 album; Pink Floyd; Kate Bush; Duran Duran; Radiohead; Florence and the Machine. Any number of albums made here have gone gold or platinum, picking up Grammys and other awards along the way.

Famed producers and sound engineers at the studios have developed groundbreaking new techniques, including automatic double tracking at the instigation of John Lennon. And it's also been a landmark in moviemaking: here were recorded John Williams's original scores for five Star Wars films, as well the scores for the Lord of the Rings trilogy-two of them awarded Oscars.

This gorgeous book includes a full history and time line, facts and figures, a discography with famous album covers from the 1930s to now, and a wealth of never-before-seen photos and treasures from the studio's own archive. It's an incredible document of cultural history, for anyone who values music and how it's made.

This book was different than i thought it would be, but i did enjoy reading about the history of these studios. Good reading if you're interested in the real history of recording in London.

If you are a Beatles fan or recording enthusiast you must get this book. Just back from England and standing in front of Abbey Road Studios, this book was a must for me. Just the photos in the book are incredible. Now this book is not about The Beatles, but obviously they are included as well as other 60's groups within it's own chapter. Also, this book was a perfect table book. I can't believe this is the first review. Get it now......................

5.0 out of 5 stars From Elgar, Glenn Miller, the Beatles & Brit Invasion to the Present! Mar 28 2013
By S. Henkels - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Sure, the big-4 had an album named "Abbey Road". But this studio is a LOT more than just one album, one foursome! Great photos and text breeze along this large coffee table book! Starting with basic recording techniques, then winding thru Edward Elgar recording his classical/ classic big "Hits" of the 30's, amazing shots of great orchestras recording with the info as well, Big Bands during WW2, many Brits not too well known here in the USA; then of course the real Invasion with songstresses and singers/ bands like C. Richard, Pete and Gordon, the Shadows, the Dakotas, Pacemakers, and then swinging in to the last 35 years or so, with sound tracks, and tons more! (Obviously, this review cannot do this book justice at all!) Do your self a favor and order this book, perfect of any music afficionado; great to browse thru with family and friends!

A great book chronicling the history of Abbey Road. It's informative and has great photos that I've never seen before. If you have "Recording The Beatles" by Kevin Ryan and Brian Kehew then you need to buy this as well. It's a great companion piece for "Recording The Beatles" and similar in it's look and in-depth coverage. But not just fro Beatle fans, it starts at the beginning in 1933 and has a great cross section of music; jazz, classical, comedy and rock. Highly recommended!
