Razor sharp, irreverant fashionista comedy, April 16 2011
This should almost be called 'Women Behaving Badly' as both of the main characters, Edina and Patsy, are totally pre-occupied with their looks, fashion, and getting drunk or stoned. I think some might draw similarities between this show and Sex in the City, but I would not equate them - AbFab is sometimes almost brutal in its raw anger and send-ups, I think SITC is a little 'kinder' or more politically correct in that regard. Jennifer Saunders is willing to send up her character Edina, constantly referring to her as fat and trying to be stylish, but coming off as a fashion victim more often than not. Edina's daughter,Saffron, is the long-suffering daughter who is forced to switch roles with her mother because her mother really acts like a child. The flashbacks can be hilarious, showing Patsy and Edina when they were growing up - for example, seeing Patsy's horrible mother gives us an insight into her character. There are lots of celebrity cameos that on this side of the Atlantic a lot may not recognize but for fans of Brit Coms it is great fun, however as the show progresses we see a lot more recognizable faces: Kristen Scott Thomas, Baby Spice, Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg, Jean Paul Gaultier, etc. The show can have its caring moments, but its own version of caring, as when Edina defends Saffy against a married professor who is trying to seduce her. If you like your comedy with a coating of acid on top, this is the show - you never know what to expect.

This review is from: Absolutely Fabulous: Complete Series 1 (DVD)
This is British comedy (well, any comedy really) at its very best. I have yet to find another comedy that would a.) make me laugh so much, and b.) make me laugh out loud even after dozens of viewings. For me, most comedies, even the best ones, generally wear out after two or three viewings. The same thing has happened countless of times: I find a new show and fall in love, then start watching the same episodes again and soon find myself getting bored. I expected this to happen with AbFab as well, but it didn't. Even though I know most of the lines by heart now, the delivery still somehow seems fresh to me. It's a work of genius. However, the show is quite outrageous and I know of people who simply don't get the humor in it, so be warned, but personally I think that AbFab is definitely worth of taking the risk. The chances are you'll be wetting your pants over and over again, and if you don't find it funny you can always (as Patsy would say) 'mark it up and sell it on'.
