Spartacus The Bolshoi Theatre of Russia,
By
This review is from: Acosta;Carlos/Bolshoi Ballet S (DVD)
I agree with The Times when they say that Carlos Acosta, dancing as Spartacus is "strong and sexy, the ultimate alpha male, and offers virile dancing of force and finesse". Excellent production. I must bring your attention to the Bonus features which include The Making of Spartacus and an interview with Carlos Acosta(the Cuban Star.)This is filmed in HD Widescreen.Music by Khachaturian and Orchestre Colonne(Paris) with Pavel Klinichev as conductor. Choreography by Grigorovich. Captivating.

A Spectacular Spartacus,
By
This review is from: Acosta;Carlos/Bolshoi Ballet S [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Yuri Grigorovich's choreography (dating back to 1968)is highly stylised and exciting. His return to the Bolshoi in 2007after they fired him in 1995 makes for a stupendous return indeed, now in his 80s.With Aram Khachaturian's epic music score and Grigorovich's choreography it makes Spartacus into an electrifying ballet. The quality of performance of the four leading roles is of the utmost importance - above all that of Spartacus. Corlos Acosta is quite phenomenal as Spartacus the slave, showing His emotion and complete identification of His character. The understanding of what it is to fight for freedom moves you to understand His quest ,and then ultimate failure in His revolt against the Romans Alexander Volchkov,s Crassus is realy very good and one can see him relish this part.Great opposite Acosta. Nina Kaptsova as Phrygia the wife of Spartacus portrays her with great feeling and expression. Maria Allash is glamarous as the courtesan and lover of crassus. Her seduction of the slaves is excellent. Last but not least are the Bolshoi,s soloists and corps de ballet. They are outstanding especialy the men of the corps, without their amazing artistry and surport the ballet could end in failure. The Russian male dancers have always been well coached. The new version of Spartacus has been revitalized and ranks well along side the 1977 Vladimir Vasiliev and 1984 and 1990 Irek Mukhamedov versions. The Bolshoi are in good shape with their new up and comming latest Spartacus, his name.... Ivan Vasiliev

Spartacus Ballet - Bolshoi - Carlos Acosta,
By
This review is from: Acosta;Carlos/Bolshoi Ballet S (DVD)
I purchased this DVD; firstly, because I love Khachaturian's music - Spartacus, 3 Ballet Suites, and secondly, because I am fond of Ballet.I have no regrets. This is awesome ! It is the most captivating, visual and electrifying performance you can imagine. Excellent film quality as well. The additional Disc - The Making of Spartacus & Interview with Carlos Acosta are a plus, and most interesting. I know I will enjoy it for a long time - over & over again !
