4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Mature Rock Record, May 24 2005
By
K.O.D. is not for me. (Irritated By The Sounds Of K.O.D.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adam And Eve (Audio CD)
This album is very good, it can compare to any good rock album out there today. So it doesn't sound like Ferment or Chrome, so what? How long can a band retain the shoegaze sound after almost a decade? Catherine Wheel was one of the few bands to emerge out of the shoegaze scene that could actually play their instruments quite well. In fact, although I am a big fan of their earlier work, this album contains songs with more depth and maturity then any of the previous albums, the first six songs are simply well written. The polished production and the cleaned-up sound is just what many old Catherine Wheel fans were not expecting but that does not dismiss that this is a very good album. If you are new to the sounds of Catherine Wheel, this is a great disc, Future Boy is one of my all time favourite songs. If you are a shoegaze fan, refer back to their first two albums. Why all the negativity from some of the old fans?
They just miss the old shoegaze-style of the early 90's, as do I, some great bands in that genere.

4.0 out of 5 stars "And the sweetness only improves", April 27 2004

mwreview "mwreview" (Northern California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adam And Eve (Audio CD)
I am a big fan of Catherine Wheel's first three albums, but was disappointed when I first listened to Adam & Eve. Usually, song after song by Catherine Wheel hooks me, but I only came away with the catchy "Phantom of the American Mother," the intense rocker "Delicious" and the celestial "Future Boy" after my first few listens to this CD. Because I'm a CW fan, I did not give up on Adam & Eve, and now I have found more to like about this album. It is really pretty solid through the 8th track "Thunderbird." It is a more melodious album than the heavy-sounding Happy Days so, those who were turned off by CW's third album may want to give Adam & Eve a chance. The last tracks on the CD are rather flat. There is a bonus 12th track that is a rather stale slow number. As much as I like "Phantom...," it is not the grand slam track I've come to expect from CW albums like "Black Metallic" off Ferment or "Heal" off Happy Days. Adam & Eve is not a bad album, it just takes more spins in the CD player to get into than their first three brilliant studio albums. CW really raised the bar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, Oct 10 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Adam And Eve (Audio CD)
This is one of those albums that force me to differentiate between favorite and best. "Ferment" is still my favorite CW album and not just for sentimental reasons. This doesn't preclude the fact that A&E is the Wheel's best record. I had difficulty relating to some of the harder material like "Broken Nose" and "Delicious", but the Tim Freese-Greene (Talk Talk) material just ate me up. Rob Dickinson (Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson's cousin) reached his zenith as a singer here. He almost became a soul singer in the way feeling oozes from his throat. Good stuff. The best part of this album is the songwriting, which is the most difficult thing to appreciate in pop music. No tricks, no slick studio stuff, just good music.
