ADAM - Aspergers Movie,
By
This review is from: Adam (DVD)
Directed by Max MayerStarring Frankie R. Faison, Peter Gallagher, Amy Irving, Rose Byrne, Hugh Dancy A romantic character study examining the obstacles to intimacy and the compromises we make in the name of love, Adam stars Hugh Dancy as a man living with Asperger's Syndrome who does his best to reach out to his pretty new upstairs neighbor. Due to his condition, Adam isn't the best when it comes to communicating. Though he frequently escapes by submersing himself in the world so space exploration, Adam senses an opportunity for a real human connection after Beth (Rose Byrne) moves into the apartment just upstairs. As Adam attempts to gain control of his off-kilter, sometimes embarrassing social skills, he discovers that with a little patience and understanding, developing a meaningful relationship might not be as hard as he previously though. Peter Gallagher, Amy Irving, Frankie Faison, and Mark Linn-Baker co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

quirky and the actors save this,
By
This review is from: Adam (DVD)
The storyline in this movie is a bit thin but the lead actors (Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne) pull it off. I thought the whole scandal involving Byrne's character's family was a tad contrived. I won't spoil it for anyone but, needless to say, it seemed like it was a bit of a filler. The main love story works mainly because of the onscreen chemistry between Hugh Dancy's quirky Asperger's syndrome affected persona and Rose Byrne's caring understanding and funloving view on life. The extras on the DVD are run of the mill although the interview of Rose Byrne by three film students was a nice change of pace. Great to see the corrupt captain from "The Wire" in a classic bit part as a friend of Dancy's recently deceased father who plays a bit of a replacement father figure in his scenes.

Charming and moving...,

This review is from: Adam (DVD)
The movie "Adam"(2009) is directed by Max Mayer, and stars Hugh Dancy (Adam) and Rose Bryne (Beth). This is a charming, heartfelt movie that portrays a brilliant young man with aspergers who learns to come out of his shell through the love and encouragement of a woman who lives in his apartment. He shows her the planetarium in his apartment, and the raccoons living in Central Park, and she exposes him to the world of people.Another film, "Mozart and the Whale", dealt with a couple who had aspergers, but here only Adam has the affliction, however Adam and Bev seem more likely to develop a real relationship. This is a somewhat sombre film, but it's also humorous. The movie is as much about healing as anything, as both Bev and Adam are learning to cope with various pressures in their lives. The film opens as Adam's father has just died and he must now learn to take care of himself. Bev is learning to trust again after being in a relationship with a boyfriend who was having affairs with other women. Adam, on the other hand, is incapable of lying and she falls for this straight forward and interesting young man. Their developing relationship movingly conveys how two people can fill in the pieces missing in each of their lives.
