More of the Addams- but beware of the" glitches" in this set!!,
By
This review is from: Addams Family, Vol. 2 (DVD)
This review will be broken into two parts.Firstly is a review of the series/DVD set itself.Secondly is a report that all consumers should be made aware of concerning visual defects. To the review. Is this a satire of the typical family?....family,ghoul style?...a wonderfully funny show?.You'd be right on all counts. While this show IS funny and IS a satire it is not on your typical family though as one would think at first glance. What normal family has a butler or the wealth they do?...none.The only comparison would be a rich family...an old, established rich family. For example Gomez has a penchant for bringing up his famous,or more to the parodied point his infamous, family members. While a "normal" rich family could boast of their ancestors famous accomplishments in their various endeavours, the Addams's can boast alright but their ancestors "achievements" usually were punctuated with a violent death through being, shot, drowned, hanged, etc. for their deeds. The entire cast plays it straight as an arrow...as it should.John Astin(Gomez) and Carolyn Jones(Morticia) were absolutely born for the parts. The initimable Jackie Coogan(Uncle Fester) and Ted Cassidy(Lurch) were superb. The Addams Family after all this time still holds up.The humour is dry to be sure but it is rapid fire and very pleasing. The extras in this set are limited to a handful of eps with commentary and one with accompanying "factoids",some bio info on various guest stars and a very short piece called"Meet the Addams". This is a DVD set any family should own....Addams or otherwise! Now to the second part...most important to potential buyers and to those who have already bought a copy of this set. I have only watched the Canadian version of this set(FYI Amercian readers). The defect in question occurs at about the 24 minute mark of the ep "My Son,The Chimp",disc one, side two.At this moment Wednesday is escorting an invisible friend through the living room to the front door. The friend accidentally bumps into Gomez who is seated and apologizes. From this point the glitch occurs. There is a close up reaction shot of Morticia, then a medium long shot of Wednesday at the front door saying goodbye to her friend. The picture during this time noticeably shrinks then returns to normal. Also the ep "Halloween-Addams Style" is in very poor shape. It is very grainy and has a slight washed out appearance. It's as if someone forgot to remaster it.After watching all the eps(from Volumes one and two) in remarkably clear and crisp condition it makes its appearance stand out even more. Today(April 27/07) I contacted Sony Pictures in Los Angeles(who own MGM now) to pass on this information.I talked to a pleasant young man by the name of Adam( what a coincidence!) to whom I relayed everything I have just described here.He said he would relay it on to the proper department.I also gave him my name and telephone number so I could be kept apprised of any developments. As I explained to Adam if this is something in the film there's really nothing that can be done. But if this problem is in the transfer process then indeed something can and SHOULD be done.If dear readers I hear ANYTHING I will post a new review and let you know. Now we all know that the "big guys" have a predilection for "forgetting" such(to them) trivialities.Well,I'd urge all of us not to let them "FORGET" about this. They put good money into making these products but we pay BIG money to buy them and we should expect a defect free product. If this is found to be a transfer defect then the LEAST Sony should do is have a new "run" made of this set and to all that contact them about this new "clean" sets should be given to them in compensation...no questions asked. To that end my friends here is Sony Pictures North American toll free phone number-1-877-766-9496.If you have a set already or are thinking of it but won't because of this let them know...NOW!! Stay tuned folks...and don't touch that dial!
