This review is from: Addicted to Love (Widescreen/Full Screen) (DVD)
Griffin Dunne brought a unique view to this film, and a sophistication rarely seen in comedy.
Life (and love) seems too good to be true for Sam (Matthew Broderick being charming and sincere) when his fiancee Linda goes to the big city for a few weeks. Trouble is, she doesn't come back! So Sam heads to the big city to find her.
Along the way, Maggie (Meg Ryan being exceptionally charming and funny) drops into his life, and he (and Maggie) learn some interesting lessons.
From a lipstick-wearing monkey and cockroach mayhem, to mistaken identity and a half-body cast and allergic rash, this film is funny but not over-the-top. The humour is so much part of the story it doesn't jump out, and aside from one or two scenes, you shouldn't have to stop the DVD and rewind to catch what you missed while laughing. Still, it is funny, endearing, and brings up questions such as "What IS love, anyway?" and "When does revenge stop being 'sweet'?"
The film has some unique views, such as Sam and Maggie sitting on a sofa watching a projection of Linda and her new boyfriend (Anton) against a painted white wall, in real time. (the ultimate in no-tech spy equipment as you'll see).
Maggie soon buys eavesdropping equipment, and soon the Revenge Couple are involved in every second of New Couple's life. It's surreal but beautiful and striking, and it allows all four actors (and two sets) to occupy the same space on screen, showing us what we already know: that these four lives have become so intertwined it may not be possible to separate them.

Human, May 30 2004

I loved this movie. I believe that it reflects the way that these four very different people react to having their hearts broken. It is so easy to judge people based on how they appear and this movie gives us pause. Very few movies can give us such insight without being depressing, yet this one leaves you feeling good.

No real surprises or chemistry, Nov 11 2007
Stick in the mud Sam (Matthew Broderick) stays home while his, looking for life, Linda (Kelly Preston) goes to the big city and is seduced by a French restaurateur (Tchéky Karyo). Naturally Sam gets the courage to recover his lost love and is detoured by her flamboyant affair. So he plots and plans to get her back using devious methods. Inter a mysterious intruder Maggie (Meg Ryan). Looks like Frenchie has an ex with the same intention as Sam.
