PageMaker 7.0's user guide measures in at more than 400 pages, and it thoughtfully explains every aspect of the vast and complex program. A wide range of impressive-looking templates, which cover just about every type of document imaginable (including business cards, labels, newsletters, ads, posters, and more), makes PageMaker a little more accessible to users unfamiliar with its functionality. The templates are divided into various levels of complexity, with the lowest level containing helpful annotations for novice users.
While its improvements over version 6.5 are minimal, PageMaker 7.0 makes a few worthy strides to justify its sparkly new version number. Among the most welcome is a surprisingly intuitive data merge feature, which allows users to configure target areas in their publications and import respective fields from a spreadsheet or database. Unfortunately, it only recognizes comma-delineated CSV or TXT files; it doesn't import data directly from common file formats created by Microsoft Excel or Lotus 1-2-3.
Ironically, another area of improvement in PageMaker 7.0 is compatibility with other programs. It easily imports and handles layered image files from Illustrator and Photoshop 5.0 and 6.0, and features input converters for files created in QuarkXPress and Microsoft Publisher. PageMaker's PDF export capabilities have been enhanced both in the main program and with the included Acrobat Distiller applet, allowing users to configure security and embedded tag options.
Even with its plethora of templates, PageMaker 7.0 isn't by any means an entry-level application. Nonprofessional users who have never used a high-caliber desktop publishing program should probably consider a simpler package such as Microsoft Publisher. While hardened, professional magazine designers tend to prefer QuarkXPress, Adobe PageMaker 7.0 is nonetheless a complex and powerful tool that packs a serious learning curve.
PageMaker 7.0 is perfect for small businesses that can't afford to hire out designers for promotional materials, or for companies that have the need to create professional-looking PDF files. Owners of PageMaker 6.5 might not feel compelled to upgrade, but companies and creative folks newly in the market for a muscular desktop publishing tool will be well served by PageMaker 7.0. --Joel Durham Jr.
PageMaker is tightly integrated with other products. It shares common menus, palettes, and keyboard shortcuts with other Adobe products, and allows you to place Illustrator and Photoshop graphics directly into PageMaker files. When exporting to Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), you can add document information, change security options, and modify advanced Acrobat Distiller settings from within PageMaker. Using the new Data Merge feature, you can merge text and graphics originally stored in spreadsheets or databases to create custom publications, including form letters, mailing labels, envelopes, and catalogs.
Adobe PageMaker 7.0 provides support for the leading print standards. Output files to any printing device, including digital quick printers and high-end commercial printers. Integrated trapping and built-in printing of color separations ensure professional-quality color. You will have access to advanced printing options, including duplex printing and the Save for Service Provider and Build Booklet plug-ins.

Adobe PageMaker 7.0 Myths Dispelled,
By
This review is from: Adobe Pagemaker 7.0 (CD-ROM)
I have written this review to correct errors or omissions in some of the previous reviews.PageMaker will accept native Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator files, Word or Publisher won't. PageMaker will easily load and handle huge documents which would make Microsoft Word or Publisher simply crash. PageMaker gives the user the ability to identify all of the graphics placed in a document and update them at will without dragging the computer down. The GUIs for both Word and Publisher are ugly and impossible to learn. These programs are classic examples of very basic initial functionality with random add-ons. Although, initially, the PageMaker GUI seems sparse, after multiple sessions and a little experimentation one soons learns that the program requires very few mouse clicks or commands to get things done. Okay, so PM is a little long in the tooth, after all it is the original DTP killer app for the Mac. However. I think you'll find that PageMaker gives the user the freedom to design and produce beautiful looking documents, instead of shackling them to the whims and constructs of Word or Publisher. Kill the Office Assistant and the Wizards!

OK. My book (THE MENOPAUSE SURVIVAL GUIDE) is researched, composed, and typeset. Time for the cover. Do I want to spend lots and lots of money for a graphic designer? No, I do not. I know exactly what I want my cover to look like, and I can do the layout myself. But I need professional software! The Adobe PageMaker 7.0 was the answer. The manual was big, complete, and user-friendly for people like me who like REAL BOOKS, not just clicking the HELP button. Any new software takes a bit of getting used to, but this was fairly simple to figure out. I was able to get the cover EXACTLY how I wanted. Plus, PageMaker 7.0 includes the ability to save pages in version 6.5. Previously, I thought CMYK, four-color separations, and other processes were only for the professionals. HA! I even figured out "trapping." I took the disk to my printer who easily did a conversion. The result?? A perfect cover!! The best part?? Amazon.com had the lowest price and fastest shipping.

ADOBE'S BIGGEST MINUS,
By reviewer (Zurich, Switzerland.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Adobe Pagemaker 7.0 (CD-ROM)
Although that I would not score this "Adobe PageMaker 7.0" zero in an honest evaluation, I will call it the biggest embarrassment Adobe Corporation brought upon herself. I have always enjoyed using Adobe products, but I can't imagine what the company was thinking when she released this 'PageMaker 7.0'. And at a high price for that matter!Well, I thank God that consumers are not tied down to this shabby software. We have choice. Given the stiff competition that exist in the Desktop Publishing arena, this PageMaker will only succeed in driving potential buyers to either "Quark" or Microsoft's "Publisher". Yes, Adobe has made name with a number of good products, but this one is very different. The notorious poor compatibility problems that the previous edition has with Adobe's own 'Photoshop' and 'Illustrator' suites are still around. Another warning for you, is to make sure that your PC is wearing a crash-helmet before attempting to run this PageMaker's bug that Adobe calls PM7. There are series of (other lesser) hassles that you may encounter by spending your money on this PageMaker. Please, if you must stick with Adobe, forget this "PageMaker 7.0" and consider buying "InDesign". You will get a better value for your money by doing so. I regret throwing away my wad by investing on this big-for-nothing PageMaker. As a result, I will continue to advise people to ignore it until Adobe learns from her errors and come up with a better model.
