Bought Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended for two reasons: to semi-automate workflow using the scripting features, and more important, it runs (very well) on an older PowerPC-based Mac with 4 GB RAM. Having weaned on earlier versions of Photoshop (5.5/Windows 98 and 6/Mac OS9), I found the learning curve as applied to CS3 Extended just as steep, but because Adobe products CS3 Extended works in similar fashion compared to these older products, I do not have to learn this new (to me) application from scratch. Essentially, CS3 Extended gives better control over shadow and midrange, compared at least to GIMP 2.6. Bottom line: expensive but now I possess a good palette of photo-manipulation tools that fit my work flow requirements, that won't be outgrown any time soon. One final point: Device Central, which comes with CS3 Extended, won't be used (support was discontinued) to add content to wireless devices. For that, another tool. Overall, if it had been possible, I'd have given CS3 Extended 4.5 stars if supporting documentation was included in the package.
