Being new to photography, the "Raw Shooting" section was very informative, and I really liked the "Web And Services" section as it had a ton of resources you would normally have to search for, or just might not know about. And for me (and many of you out there) this is a very important section because a lot of artists and photographers are now displaying or sending their work on the web, sometimes exclusively, so it's important we set our pics up right to look best on the web (vs. printing). Also, the section on "Bit Depth" answered some questions for me that I didn't previously understand.
As the other comprehensive reviewers have mentioned, this is a very logically laid-out book and covers just about every topic I could want in this type of book. In fact, it could almost be titled just "Photoshop Elements 9" leaving out the "For Photographers" because a huge portion of this info is stuff you'd want to see in a how-to-manual, whether photographer or not. The pictures are colorful and clear, the text is straight-forward and easy to understand.
I honestly can't imagine someone being unhappy with this book. If you are a photographer, especially if you are just getting into Elements, then this is a no-brainer. Buy it. If you already know a lot about Elements and have been using it quite a bit, there might not be a ton of new info here for you, but you'd still get a good refresher and have a handy reference manual to consult.
I certainly recommend this book.
For Photoshop Elements 8 I bought Photoshop Elements 8 for Windows: The Missing Manual and loved it. The Missing Manual series is great (I've also got Access 2007: The Missing Manual and Flash CS4: The Missing Manual and haven't been disappointed in either) but when this book became available through the Vine program I jumped right on it. My plan was to continuing using my version 8 Missing Manual for version 9 of the software.
I don't think you could go wrong with either book. This book has far more illustrations, and not just screenshots. For a good example, go to "search inside this book" and search for "dodge and burn tools". In the results click on page 203. Notice how the illustration shows which tools were used on what parts of the photograph, using before and after photos to make the difference clear. It's somewhat similar to the Plain & Simple series of tech books, like Microsoft Office 2010 Plain & Simple. I bought that for my wife when she returned to work after 13 years at home with the kids. This book shows you which menu options to choose or settings to change, and how those changes affect the photos.
The Missing Manual book (again, I just have version 8) has many illustrations but not as many as this book, and they're not as useful as the ones in this book. This book is more workflow-oriented: "step 1 do this, step 2 do that, and here are pictures to show how to do it." Again I'll refer you to "search inside this book". Search for "text changes workflow" and click the result for page 319. You'll see how the workflow is broken out step by step with numbers on the illustration to show what to click when.
My only complaint about this book is the index. It looks comprehensive but it's not. This book is really more task-oriented, so a tool you learned about on page 100 might be referenced many other times in the book. It would be nice if the index referenced all the other places the tool was mentioned, not just a few. It's not a huge problem, not worth knocking a star off at least. You can just use "search inside this book" here at Amazon as an index.
By the way, the files used in the book are available at the book's website - the URL is inside the back cover.
I think this is a great book for beginners and other non-experts. I find myself referring to it frequently, at least when I'm getting fancy with a picture. Usually "auto-enhance" is enough for what I need to do.
But this book, "Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 for Photographers" uses a quite different approach. It contains all of the step-by-step instructions to use each feature of the Elements software. A large collection of images are provided along the step-by-step instructions. I specially like that images are displayed side-by-side to show the difference of photo processing by the software. This really helps the readers appreciate the function of each operation, and help the reader understand what the expected results would be.
In summary, this book does a great job in presenting the Adobe Photoshop Elements in a visual way that is easier for people to follow. There are plenty of photo books for more advanced skills. But for beginners, this is an excellent book to start with.
