Photoshop has for a long time been the top-of-the-line photo editing program on both PCs and Macs. We had a student version on an old iMac back when my wife and I were students, but when I upgraded to a Macbook Pro I picked up Elements instead of full-blown Photoshop. It seemed to do everything I could imagine wanting to do with photos and more.

I never imagined you could do what you can with the latest version of Photoshop, though. If you've ever thought about upgrading to the full version of Photoshop, now would be the time, especially if you are a student and can get the student price, or if you can get the upgrade price. Some of the features on this new version are nothing short of astonishing.

First of all, it can do all the usual adjusting and layering and touch up and effects, and seems to do them better than ever. It appears to be quite stable, and very fast, possibly owing to the new 64-bit support on CS5. I've been working with Photoshop CS5 Extended every day for a few weeks (on a Macbook Pro, OS 10.6.3, 28GHz, 4GB Ram) and haven't had any problems or glitches. It installed without a hitch and runs nicely. No slow downs, no hangups, no crashing.

One thing I like is that when you open another program in Mac, the photoshop tools and utilities windows hide out of the way until you go back into it. Final Cut doesn't do that, for example, which means that if I'm working on Final Cut I need to move my windows out of the way to get at other things, or use Spaces and set my apps on different spaces windows in order to be productive.

Stars not for product, but for confusion Dec 2 2010

There is a lot of confusion over the upgrade of this product. I was aware of this having read previous reviews. I own CS2. I was assured after reading several reviews here and on the web that there was a "glitch" when upgrading from CS2 and that you would have to call Adobe who would then help you out. Well after an hour and half of waiting online and talking to first a regular CS rep and then to a supervisor, I was finally given an over-ride code to install my product. Although when going to Adobe's website it's clear that you can upgrade to CS5 Extended from CS2 for the price of $349, they have a myriad of different products with different serial numbers. This product falls in the wrong category for a CS2 upgrade, even though the list price is correct. I haven't searched Amazon to see if there is another CS5 extended upgrade that would fit CS2, but it's all pretty ridiculous because the list price is the same for CS2 as it is fro CS4 extended upgrades. I was pretty upset after dealing with Adobe because they were not going to allow my upgrade until I came back to this website and clicked on the "upgrade eligibility" link. BTW, Adobe's website has about 4 different upgrade eligibility website pages all giving you different information. In the end, the Supervisor over-road the serial number problem and I was able to install the program. I am just warning everyone else out there, it may not be as easy as some have lead you to believe about upgrading from CS2. Perhaps it's better to order directly from Adobe for this one, I'm just not sure. It's possible that even ordering from them would be confusing. The supervisor after allowing my upgrade told me they have had a lot of complaints. I own a lot of Adobe stock, so I hope they get their customer relations straightened out.

All that was expected Oct. 10 2010

The main reason I upgraded from CS3 to CS5 was the intelligent fill feature. It is very easy to use and works very well. It doesn't do everything perfectly in complex photos but it does make things go alot faster.

CS5 Extended Version Excellent... Aug. 5 2010

As always Photoshop CS5 Extended is excellent. I will mention that the version I ordered had a defect in the installation DVD, and would not install the "Extended" version to my computer. I reported this to Amazon, whereby the customer service promptly mailed me a replacement. The replacement software installed without a hitch. I give Amazon FIVE STARS for customer service!!! You guys are the best.

Photoshop CS5 July 21 2010
By V. Ward - Published on Amazon.com
An excellent product which allows the user a broad range of tools to express their imagination or simply edit their photos. It is of note that if you choose to buy the upgrade, it may not automatically upgrade from versions CS2 and earlier. To update from them you will need to contact Adobe to see if they qualify. The process to do so was quick and easy and I upgraded from CS2 with no hitches after the call.

Now this is a great program! May 5 2012

I upgraded from CS3 to CS5 and wow has Photoshop come of age! In my view PS is now capable of anything I have ever wished it could do and lots of things I never knew I needed. Maybe the best part is the Camera RAW improvements. This RAW editor is so powerful I now shoot every photo in RAW because I can do things to RAW files JPGs have only dreamed of. Working with RAW files reminds me of the old darkroom days with real film negatives, only this is much better.

Other features like content aware fill make cleaning up flaws and removing unwanted things in an image a snap and has really reduced editing time. The improvements to the selection tools are nothing short of amazing! Finally it is possible to accurately select hair.

In case you can't tell I absolutely love CS5 and I bet you will too. Get it ASAP, you won't be sorry. Also, Martin Evening's book, Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers, is a great help with learning this very complex program.
