2.0 out of 5 stars This might be a good product, but...., May 15 2011
This review is from: Adobe Premiere Elements 9 (Win/Mac) (Software)
I've had this product for a month and have mostly stopped trying to understand how to use it. Although I'm a frequent user of Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Lightroom 3.4, that hasn't helped me at all to figure out the user interface for Adobe Premiere Elements 9. Scott Kelby hasn't written a book that explains how to do useful tasks in Premiere Elements like he has for the other products mentioned. I've only found a few books written for Premiere Elements. The For Dummies book has no sample files to work with. It goes into great detail how to import your video in various formats and how to add fluffy effects to your video but is light on the editing part.

So this is a somewhat unfair review. Adobe Premiere Elements 9 may be a great product but I can't say that because I have yet to figure out how to use its editing functions. What a person new to video really needs is a companion book by an outstanding author.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one folks...really the one!, Dec 6 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Adobe Premiere Elements 9 (Win/Mac) (Software)
I'll start off by stating that I am just an everyday dad who wants to take the HD videos he shoots of family vacations, kids' birthdays, fishing trips, etc and transfer them to DVD without any loss in quality. I am not out to produce the next "Citizen Kane" nor am I out to challenge Steven Spielberg to a directorial throwdown.

I do not want to have to convert files, combine files, or compress files. I just want to transfer my family memories to disc for future viewing. If I can also chop out those moments when I forgot to turn the camcorder off and you get a good view of what footwear everyone was wearing that day, even better. If I can also include a title screen, with a neat little visual of what's on that disc, with an area where you click "play" to start the video, better still.

This sounds like a fairly simple request, no? Nevertheless, I have had trouble finding video editing software that will do this in a straightforward and simple fashion. I have bought Corel Ulead VideoStudio 11.5 Plus and Corel VideoStudio Express 2010. I have also tried Windows Movie Maker and have downloaded trials of PowerDirector 8 Ultra and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum. They all either produced bad images, required video conversions, froze up, locked up, or spit up. As far as my hardware, my PC consists of a Quad Core i7 chip with six GB of RAM and with Windows 7 64-bit.

I was scanning Amazon one day and noticed that Adobe Premier had among the highest reviews when compared to the other options and was decently priced (with a rebate). After my other experiences, I decided to download their trial version before I made the purchase. I was elated with the results.

Finding the files (which were raw, .mts files that I had transferred from an SD card to my hard drive) and loading them into the workspace was simple. Arranging them was equally simple (oldest to newest, which I chose, or newest to oldest). Burning them to Blu-ray disc (I have both a Blu-ray disc burner and a standard disc burner on my PC) was also an easy process. In no time I had the disc produced and was watching video with stunning clarity on my 67-inch HD television.

Here are some things to note:

1. Processing time for 45 minutes of HD video took about two hours. The software has to process the files prior to burning, which takes a while. It seems like slow going sometimes, but just leave it alone and be patient.

2. When it actually starts burning the disc, for some reason the process bar for this activity stays at 1 percent. Just ignore this...it is actually making progress, although it doesn't show it on the screen.

3. If you load the trial version, the disc you make will have an ugly black bar across the middle of the entire video, indicating that it was made from a trial version of Adobe Premiere. I found this annoying, but understandable. The other trial versions I tried did not do this.

4. I saved my trial project, and then opened it with the Premiere version that I bought. The full-version software retrieved it and the black bar was gone. So, if you do a project with the trial version and later buy the software, save your project to avoid re-work.

5. On my second DVD, I managed to put in a title screen and insert captions (e.g. "On our way camping," "Arriving at our hotel in Naples) just by fumbling around. This software is especially easy to navigate.

6. I like the fact that Adobe Premier has so many resources...some online, that I have not yet explored, and some in book form, including this one that was just released. Adobe Premiere Elements 9 Classroom in a Book I may end up getting more involved in this as a hobby than I thought I ever would or could. I am optimistic about this since thus far the fundamentals have proven so user friendly.

In summary, I highly recommend this product against all others. It is great for the novice, the "point-and-shoot" user, and apparently will allow you to gain more expertise with practice. Time will tell.

Lastly, I apologize for the lengthy review, but after trying so many editing software choices out there I am really pleased I finally found one that works, works well, and is so user friendly. My only gripe at this point is that by the time I downloaded the trial version and tested it, the price had increased by $10 when I went to make the purchase! Even at that, though, I still consider it a good value.

If my opinion changes (for better or worse) as I continue to work my way through this software, I will update the review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Being a novice, I like this editor, Oct 31 2010
By N. Krumpe - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Adobe Premiere Elements 9 (Win/Mac) (Software)
Pre-release customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
There seem to be multiple negative reviews for this version of Adobe Premiere Elements 9, but nearly all come from people who have much more experience than I do with previous versions of the software, or who have used competing software. I can't possibly disagree with these reviewers, because I lack their experience.

However, from the perspective of a novice user who has accumulated a lot of videos and photos over the years, and having had a chance to experiment with Adobe Premiere Elements 9, I have to say that I'm quite happy with it. In short, here's what I liked:
1) The organizer was good at helping me find all the videos and photos I have scattered on my hard drive, including videos imported from an old analog video camera, from a newer (but non-HD) digital video camera, and from an earlier (also non-HD) Flip camera. All of these are easy to "drag and drop" into a video project. I am an avid Picasa user, and I have mixed feelings about letting two pieces of software do all the cataloging of my videos. I'm not sure what to do...perhaps I'll give up on Picasa?

2) The editor was fun! I had never played around with various video effects (though I have tried such effects on photos). I'm looking forward to experimenting with the chroma key effect (my 10-year-old son enjoys trying green screen experiments), reversing video clips, and so on. There are some extra effects available if I pay to become a plus member, but it seems there are ample effects without needing to pay extra.

3) There is a nice variety of transitions, themes, titles, DVD menus, and more. Another reviewer suggested that the themes seemed to be kid-oriented. There are some kid-based themes, but there are plenty of others to choose from. I would like to note that when I installed Premiere Elements, I only needed to use the first of two supplied DVDs for the installation. Then, once the software was installed, I used the second DVD to install a large variety of themes and related content.

4) I liked the variety of sharing options, including uploading to several video sites, creating DVDs for computer viewing, and for TV viewing.

There were a few minor frustrating glitches:
1) The Adobe registration system that comes up at the beginning of the software would NOT let me log in with my existing ID, until AFTER I went to their website and logged in once (and I only learned that by searching online for a solution). After that, Premiere Elements handled my ID fine.
2) Sometimes the software is slow to respond (using Windows 7, 64-bit, on a computer that is less than one year old). Sometimes I click a clip to watch it, expecting a response, and there may be a 5- to 10-second delay before anything shows up, with no indication that something is "in progress".
3) Minor screen glitches...While using Premiere Elements 9, sometimes part of some graphic from the program attaches itself to my screen cursor and won't go away regardless of whatever applications I am using.

I'm willing to bet that most of this will get worked out in some future update.

All in all, there is plenty to recommend for novices like me who want to get started on basic video editing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhere Between Flip and Apple Editors, Oct 2 2010
By Kailua Steve - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Adobe Premiere Elements 9 (Win/Mac) (Software)
I've used Adobe Photoshop (not Elements) for many years but use Final Cut Express for video editing. I downloaded Premiere Elements 9 for Mac to see if it would be a cheaper alternative to FCE with Adobe's quality. My first impression is that it's very much like the newer Microsoft products. When you open the program it has to "phone home" to Adobe. It wants you to log in to their video sharing site, etc. It (like Apple's cheaper software) wants to take over the management of every still and video on your machine. Don't software developers realize that some people have more than one program for the same purpose?
As far as features, it seems ideal for capturing children's activities. It has lots of canned intros and styles that are children-based. It has a very few features that FCE probably doesn't have but it doesn't seem to support any after-market add ons. One is limited to what's in the box. If you're a busy mom who wants to easily make a cute (too-cute?) video of Charley's 5th birthday party, this is probably an ideal $100 editor, but you can do no more than the features built into the program.
It's not bad at all, just too limiting for me. I was hoping for something closer to Premiere (as FCE is to FCP). I had no stability issues on my Mac and got a clean uninstall from the Adobe software so I can recommend that you download the demo (which can be licensed to the full editor) and see if it's a better fit for you than it is for me.
