1.0 out of 5 stars Unreadable, Feb 7 2004
By David Klinger "dave2169" (Houston) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book was the text for an adult learning course, and all 300+ students judged the book to be incomprehensible. So many complaints were received that the instructor apologized, saying it was the only book the school could find. There is good information in this book, but you need dynamite to unearth it. I have a better than average vocabulary, but I had to keep a dictionary by my side as I read, and even then I found words from the text for which I could find no definition. Some chapters had to be read 4 times before I understood the authors' message. Reading this book was a guarantee for a nap or a headache. Please, somebody stop this book before it kills again!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Classic "Must" for educators, Aug 8 2009
By Elsie Nahum "Elsie" (Toronto Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Title: The Adult Learner.
Authors: Malcolm S. Knowles, Elwood F. Holton III, And Richard A. Swanson.
Publisher: Elsevier Inc.
Copyright 2005. Sixth edition.
Pages: 378 pages, 19 Chapters

Overall Rating: Excellent.

Overview: This is the latest edition of the classic book "The Adult Learner" which was first published in 1973. It is composed of three parts; the first entitled "The roots of Andragogy" is based on Malcolm's original writings. The second part is called "Advancements in adult learning" and includes newer theories and contemporary thoughts in the field. The third part "Practice in adult learning" is a collection of "lighter" written chapters that demonstrate in varied ways practical implications of the theory brought up in the first two parts. Each chapter is summarized and is terminated with a list of questions for reflection.

Target Audience: People who engage in adult education in any discipline, who wish to become scholarly professionals in this field.

Advantages: This is an updated classic book about Adult learning. It is comprehensive in building a theoretical framework for understanding the background of adult learning. It is written and edited in a way that walks the reader slowly and surely from the theoretical roots of andragogy, beginning with explanation of the most abstract yet basic principles, through the evolution of theories and into their practical implications. This book helps the beginner develop the language of the field of adult learning, quoting Piaget;"thinking becomes possible after language develops" (P 31).I really liked the collection of chapters in the last part each with a different character (narrative, review of research results, practical tool etc.) well demonstrating how all this theory can "come to life".

Disadvantages: This is a challenging read that takes time, effort and concentration. This is definitely not the last time I will be reading it.

Summary and recommendations: "The Adult Learner" is a wonderful book that provides you with everything you have to know in terms of the history and philosophy of adult learning and it also encourages self reflection and understanding as a learner. I would recommend this book to anyone who plans a future as an educator.
