This review is from: "Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin, Vol. 1: The Journey Begins" (DVD)
While I am overjoyed at finding this series released at last on DVD and am generally happy with it, I have to say that the digital treatment it received was not all that it could have been.
The video and audio quality is spotty... only one or two episodes are consistently clean (though not flawless... the footage skips and shows signs of damage to the master tape occasionally). Most of the episodes have weak background music tracks, though the voice track was obviously enhanced. The colours are unsatisfyingly dingy, dull and grainy for the most part; it's like they took original VHS tapes rather than true masters and converted them to digital (you can even see some shifting of the display onscreen at times, as happens with older tape recordings). You would think that, given the chance to release such a classic series on DVD, that they would have given a little more attention to the quality. Overall it's pretty good... still more watchable than many degraded home recordings.
For children, it's a perfectly good opportunity to see this wonderfully imagined and realised world. For the collector (or those trying to reclaim their childhood) the quality issues will likely come as a bit of a disappointment. However, the fact that the series is seemingly being released intact and unedited, and in the original episode order is a great plus! That's more than I can say for some classic rereleases with "best of" compilations with episodes all out of order.
So if you're a real enthusiast or would love to introduce a child to this wonderful story, do yourselves a favour and give at least the first DVD a try! Can't go wrong with the price that's for sure.
