Book Description

This sparkling conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Regency trilogy set in the English estate of Willowmere features the too-serious Oliver, Earl of Stewkesbury, and the daring and seductive Lady Vivian Carlyle.

When the very proper Oliver, Earl of Stewkesbury, took in his American cousins, he never expected the Bascombe girls to be quite so much trouble. He’s already found them a chaperone to get them ready for the Season, but now he needs to find someone to show them around London. And while free-spirited socialite Vivian Carlyle isn’t exactly Oliver’s idea of a good role model, she’s the perfect woman for the job. Oliver quickly realizes that this, too, isn’t as easy as it should be. Vivian’s strong opinions and independent attitude clash with his own, igniting a passion that neither of them expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stuck between an affair and a marriage proposal, Mar 20 2011
By theEPICrat - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: An Affair Without End (Mass Market Paperback)
It has been far too long since I last read a romance by Candace Camp - if only because I had overdosed on the genre and pretty much fell out of love, so to speak. An Affair Without End had sounded too good to resist, and let me say that I am now staring at my copy longingly because a re-read seems to also be hard to resist! Compared to Francesca from The Courtship Wager (Matchmakers series), Vivian will certainly match Francesca in her feisty zest for the ton and perhaps even kick it up a notch as she challenges society's rules for a well-bred lady. She had cajones, dear Readers, and Oliver never stood a chance of resisting her scandalous proposition! I loved their witty banters and snipes at each other - a perfect historical romance full of fluff and fun that warmed me like hot chocolate! I'm not sure if I will chase after the first 2 books of the series - they could be fun, but I've been down that road before (reading the last book and then starting at the beginning) and I think I prefer basking in the afterglow of An Affair Without End for a little while longer. I love Vivian and Oliver - not to mention, Camellia and Gregory - too much to let them go for their earlier selves. What I appreciate about Ms. Camp is that she writes series, but each book can definitely stand by itself with no major cliff-hangers to worry over.

3.0 out of 5 stars Vivian and Oliver deserved a better book than this. (A Disappointment Without End), Mar 22 2011
By Old Latin teacher - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: An Affair Without End (Mass Market Paperback)
This is Book 3 of Camp's Willowmere series and is the one I was looking forward to reading. Book 1, A LADY NEVER TELLS, was so unsatisfactory that I gave it 2 stars, but within that mess of a book were 2 characters that interested me: Oliver, Earl of Stewkesbury, and Lady Vivian Carlyle, daughter of the Duke of Marchester. Oliver is the earl who takes in his 4 annoying cousins, the Bascombe girls, who come from America to find their English relatives. Lady Vivian, Oliver's neighbor and longtime acquaintance, is asked to help with the clueless American girls' introduction to the English ton.

It was pretty obvious to us readers, although not to Oliver and Vivian, that they were destined for each other. Oliver, so staid, respectable, upstanding, and Vivian, so independent-minded and heedless of convention. So I was really looking forward to this book. All I can say, now that I've read it, is that it's better than Book 1. (That's a bit like damning with faint praise.) Why better? Because 3 of the 4 annoying Bascombe girls are pretty much out of the picture. We have to contend only with the youngest, Camellia, who, by herself, is bearable.

Here Camellia and Vivian both find their true loves. Neatly enough, Vivian has a self-effacing, noble, gentle, shy brother Gregory (heir to the dukedom of Marchester) who may be just perfect for Camellia. Will true love find its way and will Oliver and Vivian come to realize they too are made for each other? Well, just read this romance, one as exciting as jello or bread pudding for dessert, and all will be revealed. You will even have a jewel-theft mystery to solve and that creepy stepfather of the Bascombe girls is also still around to try to stir up trouble.

The book, BTW, is about the usual length for HRs, 385 pages, but the print is smaller than usual, so you get more to read for your money. Not that that's a good thing, because we have lots of unimportant filler along the way, like discussing fashion and shopping, jewelry, a health issue with Vivian's father (who cares?) and a snarky debutante named Dora who wants Gregory for herself. Buy this book if you think Candace Camp needs the money. Otherwise, the library is the way to go.

Oh, I almost forgot to say something nice. Camp has a good grasp of grammar and spelling and can write a decent sentence and even appears to know the difference between "lie" and "lay", no small feat nowadays. Unfortunately, the well-written sentences were a bit boring as a whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars charming historical romance, Mar 23 2011
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: An Affair Without End (Mass Market Paperback)
Twenty-eight year old Lady Vivian Carlyle loves her lifestyle of defying the rules of the Ton; starting with no desire to marry. Her childhood friend Oliver, the prim and proper Lord Stewkesbury shakes her up at a ball by asking her to dance. She knows they are oil and water as he is boring unlike his four Bascombe American cousins.

Still she offers him a shocking clandestine affair, which to her amazement and trepidation he accepts. At the same time someone is stealing jewelry from the Ton. Vivian assists her frantic friend Lady Holland just after a thief brazenly stole her brooch. Over the objections of a concerned Oliver, Vivian investigates. Fearing for her safety and acknowledges to himself his love for Vivian, Oliver accompanies her as she makes inquiries into the thefts.

The third Willowmere late Regency (see A Lady Never Tells and A Gentleman Always Remembers) is a wonderful tale due to a strong cast to include the last one standing solo of his American cousins and her brother in a warm secondary romance. The fire between the lead couple is fun as the sniping never ends except when they kiss. The amateur sleuth whodunit enhances a charming historical romance between two people whose refrain for years has been I'm Not In Love (10 CC).
