Interesting but not Outstanding, Mar 26 2009
By Mr. Truthteller - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Afrika-Korps (Paperback)
This book contains an interesting assortment of images but is flawed by its attempt to provide previously unpublished photos. It would have been better to have a mixture of primarily new with a few more commonly seen photos mixed in to provide a well-rounded perspective of the subject matter.
This defect is glaringly present in the chapter on Rommel. The chapter does contain several photos of Rommel I have not seen before but lacks photos on important aspects of his time in Africa. For example, there is no photo of Rommel's Storch plane that he famously used to get a better perspective on how battles were going. Instead, we get a picture of a sample, grounded Storch plane with a comment that they were commonly used in Africa, but no comment that Rommel ever came near one. In addition, there is no photo of Rommel's half-track, Greif, that he also used to travel around in on the battlefront. We do get some rare photos of Rommel in and around his staff car, but the effect is not the same.
As with other books in this series, the general subject matter is broken into chapters chronologically. Each chapter contains a very general introduction of a few pages, followed by the photographs, which are all captioned.

Good, but not great..., Feb 1 2010

It pains me to not give an Ian Baxter work 5 stars. I generally enjoy his works and eagerly collect new volumes as the opportunity presents itself.
Afrika Korps is a solid work packed with photos. And yes there are many that have not been published before. But...overall, they just lacked some punch. Sometimes there's a reason why a picture hasn't been published before...and I think these are the kind you don't put in your photo album, because you have better ones.
That said, you can't go wrong owning another book of Afrika Korps pictures. And yes, there are some good details in this book. I particularly liked the pictures of Rommel working over his maps. Clearly these are propaganda, but they were something different. I was also intrigued by one of Rommel's orderlies who appeared to be wearing the cuffband of the Grossdeutschland Division. This is quite an oddity and may in fact be a picture that doesn't belong in this particular tome.
So should you run out and buy this book?? If you are a hard core studen of the Afrika Korps and Wehrmacht...absolutely. If you are like me, you can't own enough books on the subject. And truthfully, there is enough chronology of the North African campaign thrown into this book to make a resonably good book for someone just learning about the Afrika Korps.
So 4 stars it is. Heia Safari!!!
