Book Description

Books on how to survive breakups are often too linear, not reflecting the cyclical emotions and ups and downs that many women face when long-term relationships end. This book, inspired by personal experience, shows how even strong, independent women suffer backslides into depression or resentment. It goes beyond the first painful stage to explore the full spectrum of the breakup process.

The authors, who both ended seven-year relationships within the same year, found they provided each other with more comfort and support than offered by the average breakup book. They sought out other women and gathered their stories and voices, and the result is this realistic approach to handling breakups, rebuilding identity, and restoring happiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, Jun 18 2004

This review is from: After the Breakup: Women Sort Through the Rubble and Rebuild Lives of New Possibilities (Paperback)
I ordered this book after my girlfriend and I broke up in a difficult situation. This book was so wonderful, it kept me sane, and reminded me to trust myself. It was a comfort during the ground zero stage, and later allowed a sigh of relief, as life came out of that stage. All along the way it was like having other women to associate how you were feeling with, and it was a great source of comfort, after the support of a partner was lost. I would reccomend this book to every woman, even before a breakup, so that they are always prepared!!

This review is from: After the Breakup: Women Sort Through the Rubble and Rebuild Lives of New Possibilities (Paperback)
Desperate for comfort when my marriage caved in, I picked up this book, despite my misgivings. Written by two freelance writers, (not professional therapists), it suffers from the clunky, impersonal, humorless style of a bloated magazine article, and is about as helpful. With advice like, "Some people find it useful to reconnect with their friends. Others like to spend time alone", and other simplistic and obvious platitudes, this book describes the hell that women go through afer a break-up, but offers no real help getting through it. There are no exercises, no resources (such as where to go to get counseling, or phone numbers for suicide hotlines), and no real focus. Most of the professional advice that is given from therapists and counselors is taken from other books. These women didn't even do their own research! A quick search through the Amazon Relationship book section will turn up half a dozen more promising books. Don't settle for this one, you'll be wasting your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Woobie, Mar 11 2003

I picked up this book and was immediately comforted. I searched through shelves and shelves of books before I found this perfect piece of work. I carry it with me where ever I go to shed light on each day. What's great, is reading this book really makes you feel like you are doing something to help you move forward after a painful break up. I found it especially interesting all the different types of people, ages, sexual orientation, etc. that went through the exact same thing. This book breaks barriers and had my smiling during a time I thought it might never be possible again. Thank you to the authors for giving me back hope.
