Jun 6 2011 Hercule Poirot Mysteries
The Queen of Mystery has come to Harper Collins! Agatha Christie, the acknowledged mistress of suspense—creator of indomitable sleuth Miss Marple, meticulous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and so many other unforgettable characters—brings her entire oeuvre of ingenious whodunits, locked room mysteries, and perplexing puzzles to Harper Paperbacks. Murder is a family affair in After the Funeral, as Poirot hunts for a killer following the savage hatchet-slaying of a woman who loudly questioned the cause of her brother’s death at his memorial service the day before.

“Complete with a genealogical tree, a dubious will, and a family full of potential murderers.” (New York Times)

From the Back Cover

When Cora Lansquenet is savagely murdered with a hatchet, the extraordinary remark she made the previous day at her brother Richard’s funeral suddenly takes on a chilling significance. At the reading of Richard’s will, Cora was clearly heard to say,“It’s been hushed up very nicely, hasn’t it.…But he was murdered, wasn’t he?”

In desperation, the family solicitor turns to Hercule Poirot to unravel the mystery.…

5.0 out of 5 stars Another spellbinding Christie Aug 21 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Although this mystery is not among the more well-known Christies, it's certainly one of the best done. The characters are interesting, complex, and often quite humorous; the subtle clues are laid with care; and Christie really makes the novel's atmosphere come to life in her descriptions of Enderbury Hall and Cora's shabby cottage and sleepy town. Written in the 1950s, there is definetly a touch of nostalgia woven throughout the book -- hints of the changing post-war period, glimpses of years gone by. The novel's solution is spectacular, not only for the ingenious resolution of the puzzle but also because Christie really hits the nail on the head when she reveals the murderer's psychological justification for his/her acts. She has a deep understanding of the obsessions and quirks that, taken to extremes, motivate humans to commit terrible acts.

When Richard Abernethie dies, no one suspects anything since he had been ill for some time. Also, none of his relatives were particularly sorry since his will made them all extremely wealthy. However, after the funeral, his slightly batty sister blurts out that Richard's death didn't seem quite natural. The family is appalled, but later remember her words when yet another murder occurs.

The concerned family solicitor calls in the renowned private detective Hercule Poirot. A piece of wedding cake, an oil painting copied from a post card, and a Victorian bouquet of wax flowers are among the clues that set Poirot on the trail of the killer.

In 1963, a movie titled "Murder at the Gallop" was made based on this plot. Poirot was deleted from the movie and Miss Jane Marple was inserted to solve the case.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Fun And Intriguing Book July 7 2000
Format:Paperback
This book has got to be one of Agatha Christie's great ones. The charactes are extremly well developed and the plot is very intriguing. Everytime you think you know who did it, something unexpected happens. I really loved it But the ending kind of disappointed me. The solution is very clever and igneious, nobody can probably ever guess it but she should have picked another. Read this one however because it is excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not very thrilling, but good.
My favorite Christie novel is 'The ABC murders' where the reader is left totally perplexed. This one is good, but definitely not of the same class. Read more
