4.0 out of 5 stars Great movie, poor audio synch during the last 20 minutes in 5.1 Surround Sound audio, Dec 1 2007

I thoroughly enjoyed this film, but am frustrated at the poor quality production that went into this DVD -- at least in Canada. I went to buy this a few months ago, but an employee at my local video store told me there was a defect on all copies. The audio is out of synch for the last 2 chapters (Scenes 14 and 15) of the film. I was hoping future copies would be fixed. I just checked my newly purchased copy and he was partially right. The audio is delayed by at least 2 seconds, but luckily only in the 5.1 surround sound setting. The more traditional 2.0 stereo audio setting works fine, and the picture and sound are generally great, but this serious failure of production need not have happened.

I'm very disappointed because international and independent films like this get very little attention. Even though this was nominated for an Academy Award for "Best Foreign Film," I doubt it will sell millions of copies in North America. It's obvious that a more popular release would have been given greater respect -- either in the careful attention to its initial production or in quickly issuing a recall to fix the problem. This is a huge insult to fans of non-blockbuster films and especially audiophiles.

5.0 out of 5 stars high tension without "action" or violence, Sep 20 2007

It is impossible for me to write a synopsys without revealing the plot. There are several changes in the story building up the tension.
Jacob, a Danish citizen is running an orphanage in India. The orphanage is broke. A Danish millionaire is offering financial support under the condition to meet Jacob personally.
Reluctantly Jacob is flying to Denmark promising his orphans to be back soon.
Without obvious reason the millionaire is permanently delaying his final decision concerning his donation. Under the pretext to get more acqainted with Jacob the millionaire invites him to the wedding of his daughter. There the main surprise occurs and then the donation is really in danger.
The actors are superb and so is the story. There is no cliché and the story is faultless. All of my friends share my opinion that this is the best film that we have seen for years or maybe have ever seen.

I watched this movie on the advice of a colleague, and I'm glad I did. The film covers the movements of two men who are on a mission to extract from each other the thing they want most out of life: security for their love ones. Traveling all the way from an orphanage that he runs in the slums of Bombay, Jacob meets Jorgen, a Danish industrialist, in Copenhagen, where they discuss the possibility of a large charitable donation. This is where the story takes off and starts to get involved, with both men's pasts catching up with them at the wedding of Jorgen's stepdaughter. What they learn in the process of a week about each other's shortcomings makes for some very lively, tense and moving drama. Both men will learn that life, when it involves caring for the needs of others, is infinitely more involved and rewarding than simply negotiating big money deals. This movie is a family affair, where "blood is thicker than water", and kith and kin stick together through the tough times. In the end, the decisions the two protagonists - Jacob and Jorgen - are both painful and heroic. I enjoyed the film for other reasons than a well-crafted plot. There was, also, the great camera work that effectively captured both the main characters' many emotional changes, along with the gorgeous landscape and rich culture of rural Denmark and the ancient architecture of Copenhagen. Yes, a very likeable movie, even with a slight audio sync problem near the end.
