Informative Book on Workplace Violence June 13 2013
By Tradecraft - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Aggression in the Workplace: Preventing and Managing High-Risk Behavior by Marc McElhaney, Ph.D. provides relevant information on a very important topic. The book is broken down into eight chapters covering the following material:

Chapter 1: The Importance of Preparation and Prevention
Chapter 2: Who Commits Workplace Violence: Identifying the At-Risk Employee
Chapter 3: Common Errors and Oversights
Chapter 4: Preventing Workplace Violence: A Ten-Step Solution
Chapter 5: Responding to a Threat: An Overview of the Assessment and Management Process
Chapter 6: Safe Terminations
Chapter 7: Defusing Angry Employees: A Manager's Guide to Crisis and Conflict Resolution
Chapter 8: Stalking and Predatory Behaviors in the Workplace

There are also 5 appendixes at the end of the book covering policy, self-assessment, violence assessment, return to work agreement, and a termination agreement.

McElhaney is a psychologist and certified mediator with experience in workplace issues. Additionally, he belongs to a host of professional organizations. Based on both his education and experience it appears that he is qualified to write this book. He also believes that almost all workplace violence is preventable. Some sections of the book tend to lean towards the authors psychological background in his explanation of behaviors and assessments. This is not necessarily bad but it can be important to understand the authors perspective and where he is coming from.

Chapter 4: Preventing Workplace Violence: A Ten-Step Solution provides concrete steps that employers can take to address workplace violence issues. Organizations that follow the 10 steps will have done their due diligence. It does not mean that violence will be prevented but they are active steps to mitigate such violence. If you didn't have time to read the whole book and wanted to know what needs to be done now in relation to workplace violence then this would be the chapter to read.

Overall Assessment:

Aggression in the Workplace: Preventing and Managing High-Risk Behavior is well written and very easy to understand. This book provides essential information in addressing issues related to workplace violence along with methods for prevention, mitigation, and response. I would like to see information on dealing with an active shooter situation but the book was written in 2004 and much has changed since that time in relation to active shooters.

I recommend this book.

Aggression In The Workplace Dec 29 2004
By Dr. Michael H. Corcoran - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
In today's world, "workplace violence" has become more convoluted as to what that covers as well as what is expected of an employer to deal with and prevent such behaviors. While there can be no one best "program" or "check-off" list, there are established and mostly "common-sense" ways of addressing these behaviors. Dr. McElhaney has managed to simplify these explanations and has thus developed a critical workbook that explains appropriate ways to respond to inappropriate behaviors as well as prevent them.

He guides you effectively through pre-employment screening, training issues, grievances, disciplinary and termination procedures - thus making this a complete manual for managing the high-risk employee. Anyone who is worried about their liability in dealing with employees should make this a "must-buy" book for future reference and guidance on how to deal with all types of aggressive behavior in the workplace.

Dr. McElhaney has provide any employer with much more than a reference about worker behavior...this book is like a response guide and a valuable tool in understanding and effectively responding to potential workplace aggression.

I can not reccomend this book enough to you if you are an employer, or work in a role for an employer where you may interface with potentially aggressive workers.

Buy this book....you won't be sorry.
