Moviegoers and more than a few critics found much to enjoy in this Disney film about a lost dog named Buddy. The canine is befriended by a lonely boy and proceeds to become the star of the kid's junior high school basketball team. Demonstrating an abundance of on- and off-court agility, Buddy can dribble like a pro (no, not the wet kind of dribble), and he never misses a shot. Michael Jeter plays Buddy's original owner who returns to get his dog back (don't worry, he's an unworthy weasel), and director Charles Martin Smith brings a refreshing flair to the climactic basketball scenes. Air Bud was a modest hit for Disney, and the film's entertaining vitality gets a touch of poignancy from the fact that Lucky, the canine actor in the title role, died of cancer not long after the film was released. --Jeff Shannon

Sometimes goofy, sometimes touching, and always fun, Air Bud is a true original. Despite a gazillion sequels which aren't worth a spit, this first entry is very very good and highly recommended for the whole family.
STORY:
A young boy moves with his family to a small town, and still lonely from his father's death, has trouble making friends and fitting in. When he chances upon a sprightly golden retriever, who is an absolute whiz at basketball, the two make the school team. But then the dog's original evil owner shows back up...
HEART:
So many issues permeate all through this story. From parental loss to animal cruelty to bullies to learning team spirit, all sorts of life lessons are exhibited. The pain Josh the boy lives with is very noticeable, and the love and companionship of Buddy the dog is remarkably healing.
FUN:
When Buddy takes on and takes over the basketball court, he will plaster a fun smile full of silliness onto your face. Yes it is non-sensical and yes it is against all rules and common sense, but who cares? The fun and merriment Buddy illicits is courageous. And that is all good.
Air Bud is a swell fun movie that has a soul. A dog helping heal a troubled boy, who then returns the favour. All while playing basketball.

This is a perfect movie for kids who like sports and animals. My son(4) loves this movie, we also have the soccer, football, and baseball versions of this movie. They are all great.
