2.0 out of 5 stars BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II - A lackluster port of a good arcade game., Jun 4 2011
By Brett - Published on Amazon.com
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Blazblue: Continuum Shift II (Video Game)
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II is the third fighting game to come out on the 3DS since launch. SSFIV3D was a launch title, and a few weeks ago Dead or Alive: Dimensions was released. It's an odd thing to see three pretty big fighting franchises released within the same few months on a new system. It's already seeming over-saturated with fighters.

To start off, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II is a port of the 2D anime-styled fighting game BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. It contains the DLC characters and costumes, but not much else. I've played all the the previous BlazBlue games, on the console and handheld. I picked this game up figuring I'd enjoy it, as I have the others.

This game is missing a few key features though: it only supports local multiplayer. There is no online multiplayer (which both DOA:D and SSFIV3D have). There is no StreetPass or SpotPass functionality. For a fighter to maintain its longevity, multiplayer is very important. However, this isn't the only problem. It feels like a super-squished down version of the console title. The graphics aren't sharp and smooth, and the 3D is very gimmicky. It doesn't feel as genuine as some of the other 3DS games out there. Also, the only controller scheme is to use the d-pad for character movement and menu selection. Normally, I would be okay with this. However, due to the position of the d-pad on the 3DS, it is very awkward. I have been using the slider for most games on the 3DS because it is comfortable. I don't understand why the option to use either was removed. It's not a matter of whether or not the d-pad or the slider is better, it's a matter of having the option.
Another very odd thing is, the game is missing sleep mode on the 3DS. In the manual it says, "Sleep mode is not supported." I don't understand; I've never seen that not supported. When you close your 3DS, the game remains on, using normal battery and counting the gameplay time. It's just something very strange to leave out.

On the bright side, the game is still fun. There is a balanced and wide selection of characters. All of them being unique and pretty fun to play. There are a ton of gameplay modes, which definitely give the player something to do. There is unlockable art and costumes as well.

Gameplay is very similar to other 2D fighters like Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, and the previous BlazBlue games. It's a four button fighter (unlike the 6 button Street Fighter games), and it feels solid.

In the end, BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II is a let down. It doesn't compare to the other two great fighters already out on the 3DS. It's not impressive in anyways; it feels like a budget title to me. I think it should have been priced at a lower tier or given some more time when developed in Japan to be a more complete package.

2.0 out of 5 stars Horrible port., May 6 2012

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Blazblue: Continuum Shift II (Video Game)
I bought this a while back, because I thought this would be a good game. I was wrong. First off, you can't move with the cirle pad, you move with the d-pad at the BOTTOM of the system. And no, you can't configure the control settings. And another flaw is that its a permanent save file. I let a friend borrow it for a while and to my surprise, when I tried to restart it. I couldn't. $30 down the drain.
