3.0 out of 5 stars Unique guide July 23 2010
By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Length: 0:29 Mins
This guidebook is unique in its presentation of information, although I'm not sure gamers might like it.

The book's written like a novel with the walkthrough highlighted in yellow to separate it from the story. Since it's written like a novel (third person), the text aren't exactly instructional although you can always guess what to do from the text.

If you're using this as a quick reference when you get stuck, locating where you are might be tough as you're sifting through a chunk of text.

There aren't any maps included so locating objects, or yourself, might be a bit tough. The lack of maps makes you rely on the walkthrough which isn't spoiler-free, unfortunately. If you don't want to miss out items, you have to read in advance and sometimes you'll be smacked with a plot turn you wish you learn from the game instead of the guide.

Overall, it's a comprehensive guide that covers everything it should. The presentation style is definitely not for everyone.

In my case, I would love to play the story than to read the story.

3.5 stars out of 5.

By the way, there's a novelization of the game itself simply (and similarly) titled Alan Wake.

-

This book is also available as part of a bundle with the Alan Wake Collector's Edition Bundle: Prima Official Game Guide, which includes a making-of book for the game, titled Alan Wake Illuminated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good guide, though sometimes confusing July 5 2011
By Michael Lebron - Published on Amazon.com

I was looking forward to getting this, so that I could play my Alan Wake game. I don't like being lost in games like these. I'm glad to say that the guide is a good read, but since it's layed out like a book, it can sometimes be a bit confusing. I'm used to glancing at the guide and getting the information I want. Here, I have to really dig and search for the info that I want. It can be a bit frustrating for some.

Very good guide. I buy every guide from my favorites games, and this is really good. It is like a book. Just for mature gamers.
5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant... March 9 2012

It is rare that a guide book for a video game almost comes across as a valid novel but this book manages to do just that. Sticking with the theme of "writing from the game the author of the guide book has managed to fit every little detail into the book in a story format. It is an interesting way to get information across and is way more fun that staring at charts and maps. If you aren't in the mood to "read" you can just skip to the highlighted portions to find your collectibles and important information. I used this book during my three playthroughs on XBOX and I am glad to use it again now that I get to play Alan Wake on my PC.

first let me say that the first review i read on this guide lead me to believe that the maps were not very good,so iwound up getting the collectors edition also. just to find out that they are the same!! no difference in the guides themselves, but i haven't had a problem with the maps or locations in the game yet. it comes in very handy with all aspects of the game. anybody need a new guide? let me know, cheap, lol
