5.0 out of 5 stars Alaska for the rest of us Sep 28 2012
By P. Wesslaw - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Only been to Alaska once, on a cruise ship and bought a few guide books to make the most of it. I thought this book was really good for the detail on getting around the ports on your own. I couldn't afford a lot of the shore excursions so followed the advice in this book on seeing lots in the port on foot. I hiked to the graveyard in Skagway with the help of the map in this book and that, as well as the hike up to the lake trail overlooking the town, made Alaska forever memorable to me. I like the gal's writing style too, unassuming.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice background - short on details Jun 23 2012

Anne Vipoli's book is long overdue - a guide for the more adventuresome cruiser who wants more than the cruise line hype pushing their tours. This comes close but I would love to see more detail, a la Rick Steves, on very specific itineraries for the adventuresome cruise passenger. The general background on each port is nice but it just fills pages and is readily available from other sources.

One other matter, specific to Alaska and a few other places. In some ports, like Skagway and Ketchikan, where one or two cruise ships' complements can outnumber and overwhelm the local population, the cruise line run tours often book up some venues, so the passenger has no choice but to book through the cruise line and is well-advised to do so in advance. Noting those venues and tours would be equally helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alaska Cruising Feb 5 2012

I purchased this book in anticipation of my Alaskan cruise in June. It is filled with all sorts of information about each of the towns that I will be stopping at. It has helped me choose excursions that suit my interests and also gave me ideas of activities I can do on my own. This is a very informative book.
