Album Description

El Guincho is Pablo D¡az-Reixa, born in the Canary Islands and now based in Barcelona. His mind blowing 2008 debut is a mix of Afro-Beat percussion, Calypso harmonies, Psych Tropic lia, World Music samplers, Doo Wop, Trance repetition, underwater Pop, steel drums and island feeling plus club oriented song structures, up-tempo beats and exotica production. Alegranza was released in Spain in the last days of December 2007 and went out of print in less than a month. His popularity is rising to heady heights all around the world with a cult status thanks to Pitchfork and constant blog posts. Mistletone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Percussive, VERY percussive, Nov 23 2008

not really too much to notice at first aside from the drums... lots of percussion. but it grows on you and you find yourself hitting play after it ends and going back for more immediately. did I mention the drums? the different layers of drums and the energy they induce in you??? try to give it a GOOD listen to see if you like them, but it will get under your skin. just thinking about it makes me want to put it on and dance around the room. seriously, when I was listening to it for the first time, my mom came in to ask me a question and she started dancing in place.

if the ubiquitous "they" ever think of the ultimate collaboration, it should have this dude doing the beats, Juana Molina doing the background atmospherics, Q-Tip, Quasimoto and maybe Talib Kweli doing the verses. "they" could also have broken and dented helium tanks as the cover art (go ahead and do this!!! you don't need to give me any royalties for the idea!!!)

disclaimer: if you don't have natural rhythm, you might want to pick up something from 3 Doors Down instead. nothing wrong with them, but if you're looking at this review, you probably already have an idea about it (and will therefore appreciate it). f it, I'm gonna' go ahead and give it 5 stars (was going to be 4 stars, but thinking about the energy of the album got me all worked up, so I had to reconsider).

5.0 out of 5 stars happygranza!, April 13 2009

This is the type of album that stays in my cd player for days... then a week later, i say "hey" and realize, "it's been days since i listened to anything else!" then i found out about Coconot - look into them too - Alegranza is a glance ahead... an unpolished, totally honest, bursting with enthusiasm gaze into the future of music... at least i hope that's the future, because that's one heck of a future!

This album is a lot of fun, and the description of a Spanish Animal Collective isn't entirely off (though this is more fun and less off-beat than any AC release I can think of at the moment). The vinyl is clean and ncely produced.
