I bought two. This device is strong compared to the average device but it does not live up to the hype. Range is two or three houses line of site with both short and long antenna.

It does work out of the box for Linux + Raspbian though. Supports monitor mode.

Alfa AWUS036NH 2000mW 2W 802.11g/n High Gain USB Wireless G / N Long-Range WiFi Network Adapter with 5dBi and 9dBi Screw-On Swivel Rubber Antenna and Mini bendable Flex cable for Better adjustment

Good item If your trying to pick up more AP's for desktop, laptop, or do lil offensive security. In comparing this to my stock broadcom wireless card in mylaptop, and my d-link wda 2320. I have to say this is a really huge upgrade. It virtually it puts my pc right b-side the router. When my router is, kinda like up the street and around the corner. I haven't compared it to the gsky or the AWUS036H, wich i hear is really good. I'm not sure if its really pushing 2000w. but, -2000w's just sounds kinda of creepy, may i suggest 100ft extension cable.

ps the 9db antenna, is a stoney jackson! I can say makes a good miniature pool stick.

Works great with Macs and PCs. Not as sensative as i'd like, spend some more money, and get a good antenna too.
Starts right up in backtrack June 21 2013

You can't ask for better plug and play than this. I do have to complain that Alfa AWUS036NHR (pretty close to the same usb dongle as the NH here except that the NHR adds the N capability) was not more forth right about it's inability to work in monitor mode (promiscuous) with Backtrack. That should be one of the more prominent points that is put in the specifications of the dongle (in the interest of honesty...which honesty will create much more strong return customers then the short-sighted notion of not saying anything in the hopes that some poor schmuck will buy something they can't use and then have to buy another dongle). I was the poor schmuck who bought the NHR, when I actually needed the NH which is capable of 'promiscuity' (no pun intended).
Alfa Network Adapter March 12 2010

The adapter was easy to install and worked straight out of the box. It appeared to nearly double the signal strength of already available networks and showed some which were previously unavailable.
The major downside was the extra large 9db aerial which actually seems to work against you and reduces the signal strength as against the normal 5db aerial. The large aerial also makes the adapter unstable and unable to stand on the desk without being supported. There was no point in purchasing the larger aerial.
