A flawed yet underrated sequel, May 15 2011

I'm one of the few that actually enjoys Alien 3. It's not a perfect film by any means, but being a huge fan of the series, I will definitely say that it is pretty underrated. One of the things that annoys me, and the thing that is probably the films biggest flaw is that mysterious egg at the beginning.
Other than that, it's a solid sequel from first time director David Fincher. The film does get pretty slow near the end but if you've seen the documentary done for the film, you already know it went through development hell, so those certain things are easier to overlook.
As far as PQ for the Blu-ray, it's fantastic. The film has never looked better, and probably never will. There are some shots though that look a bit smudgy or less detailed but I would say 90% of it is very well detailed.
Oh, and be sure to watch the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 if you haven't already. It's my preferred cut and is much more closer to Fincher's original vision.

Severely underappreciated, Feb 25 2012

Having just finished watching the Assembly Cut of this film, I feel compelled to write this review.
Let me say that I love this series. The Alien series is one of the most significant sci-fi series of all time. As such, I completely understand that some people hate this film. To be completely fair, it had quite the pedigree to live up to. It fell short, but not by much.
I first saw the theatrical version of this film, and like most, I was completely unimpressed. It seemed shallow in comparison to the first two films. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but it seemed like this film was a pastiche of ideas merely thrown together. After doing some light research, I found that my suspicions were correct. This was indeed the horrible offspring of the merging of 3 scripts. Add to this the fact that a young David Fincher was taken advantage of by 20th Century Fox, and you realize why this film (the theatrical version) was such a disjointed disappointment.
Watch the Assembly Cut. Witness what Fincher had in mind for this film. The Assembly Cut is a joy to watch. It fleshes out the characters a bit more, it feels less wonky, and, in my opinion, it comes close to being a masterpiece. Severely flawed, and lacking in a few areas, but a masterpiece nonetheless. In some respects it holds a candle to both Alien and Aliens. It takes the story full circle, and even manages to give it a pretty decent ending.
Should Alien 3 have been an entirely different movie? Absolutely. But the Assembly Cut is the best cut of the film that was eventually released. Enjoy it, and don't worry about what could have been.
Whatever you do avoid Alien Resurrection like the plague. Now that is just a horrible movie no matter how you look at it.
For more technical details, the picture quality is amazing and the soundtrack has never sounded better.

well worth a second look, Jun 18 2011

When I saw this movie in the theater I was disappointed big-time.
Most of the characters are unlikable and it's hard to get into a movie
when you really don't like 90% of the characters. The directors cut
of this movie is dramatically better than the theatrical and well worth a second look.
