Not as Good as Dracula,
By
This review is from: All-Action Classics No. 3: The Odyssey (Paperback)
After reading the All-Action Classics first release, their version of Bram Stoker's Dracula, I was very interested to see what they would do with Homer's Odyssey.I won't say I was disappointed, but I wasn't really impressed, either. Writer Tim Mucci does a decent job of revising the original epic for a comic-book format, but his attempts at modernizing some of the dialogue often fall flat. To give an example, Zeus once complains about Poseidon and Athena's pestering him about Odysseus because he's currently working on 'a tricky bit of precipitation.' That's just lame. Ben Caldwell and Rick Lacy's pencils don't fare much better. While in 'Dracula' the simplistic style worked quite nicely, here it becomes an eyesore after a while, mostly because it looks like someone coloured a rough draft instead of waiting for the finished sketches. Even the cover, which depicts the cyclops, Polyphemus, throwing a crag of rock, looks less impressive up close, with odd lines sticking out where they shouldn't. If this is how these guys are going to continue, I think I'll pass, even with No. 4 coming out soon, The Wizard of Oz.

Don't Bother,

This review is from: All-Action Classics No. 3: The Odyssey (Paperback)
Reason for Reading: This was a Cybils '10 nominee and I hadn't read it by the time judging was due as it was not a contender by that time and I'm just now getting to it.I really don't have a lot to say about this adaptation of Homer's Odyssey. I did not enjoy it, and in fact found it confusing and rather boring. Let me preface that statement by saying I am a great fan of Greek mythology and have read *many* retellings of The Odyssey and will continue to do so as I love the story. However, this adaptation jumped around from scene to scene, flashback to present, with no segues between leaving out a lot of the *why* we are suddenly in a certain situation. Knowing the story well, I knew what was missing but I can't imagine this being someone's first exposure to Homer's Odyssey. The art also was certainly not appealing to me. I found it very busy with a lot of stuff going on in each individual panel that took away from the basic action it was meant to depict and I'm just not a fan of the square-jawed angular type of art. Of course this is just aesthetic and will vary with ones personal tastes in art. Overall, not recommended.
