Fourteen years ago, unknown assailants kidnapped and killed the wife and daughter of wealthy Tom Somerset. Since that day, Tom has kept his other daughter Melina a virtual prisoner In Europe even though the feisty lass has occasionally escaped. Melina has finally returned home to the United States, but her father refuses to allow her to come out in public.
Cat burglar Ash Thorndyke has reluctantly agreed to the government deal. He abducts Melina in exchange for the Feds releasing his dying father from prison. However, at a reception, he overhears his contacts discussing a more diabolical fate for Melina. He kidnaps Melina and immediately recognizes her as the woman he shared two glorious weeks with in London just a few months ago (one of her successful escapes). He is unaware that she is carrying his infant. On the lam, they hook up with an orphaned teenager who they agree to take to her uncle's home in Hopewell Springs, Virginia. As they travel across the country and ultimately spend a month in Virginia, Melina and Ash fall in love. However, neither seems ready for a permanent relationship and her adversaries are converging on them to complete the dastardly deed started fourteen years ago.
ALL-AMERICAN BABY is a delightful relationship drama that emphasizes the human need for loving, compassionate companions. The story line contains some elements of intrigue, but the main plot centers on the needs of the various cast members for one another in order to survive. Dr. Maslow would appreciate Peg Sutherland's novel which is a definite winner.
