TV's favourite single moms are back!
All the warmth and laughter of this ground-breaking sitcom is yours with season three of Kate & Allie. Filmed on location in New York City, this was a rare TV program that dealt with independent women who were also single parents.
Produced and directed by Bill Persky (That Girl), Kate & Allie stars Susan Saint James (McMillan and Wife) as free-spirited Kate McArdle and Jane Curtin (3rd Rock from the Sun, Saturday Night Live) as straight-laced Allie Lowell.
Also starring Ari Meyers as Emma Jane McArdle, Allison Smith as Jennie Lowell, Frederick Koehler as Chip Lowell and Paul Hecht as Charles Lowell.
Guest stars during this stellar season include film actors Paul Gleason, Robert Cornthwaite, a teenage Ben Stiller plus David Rasche (Sledge Hammer!), Alan North (Police Squad!), Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman), Patricia Richardson (Home Improvement, The West Wing), Geoff Pierson (24, Grace Under Fire), James McDaniel (NYPD Blue), Barbara Barrie (Suddenly Susan), Christa Miller (The Drew Carey Show, Scrubs), Michael O'Hare (Babylon 5), Mercedes Ruehl (Frasier) and legendary talk show host Dick Cavett. Daytime drama fans will enjoy seeing their favourite classic soap stars turning up in supporting roles in almost every episode.

In addition to the above, the show has several other redeeming qualities. One, it was filmed in New York (including short scenes at the beginning of each episode that were filmed on the actual streets); two, the premise that Kate & Allie were both single momms who had moved in together to raise their respective families. It was ahead of its time in the latter way (as proven by the fact that in later seasons, the opening credits showed Kate & Allie going to separate beds -- to disprove notions that they were lesbian). And the fact that it was filmed in New York definitely gave it a vibe and mood that sets it apart from most Hollywood-based sitcoms.
Let's hope that VEI will treat us to the remaining three seasons of this unique show!

With their children - Kate's Emma and Allie's Chip and Jennie - the lifelong best friends get into their shares of hijinks. They also support one another through emotional crises, as seen in "Thanksgiving," where Allie finds herself alone with Charles' new wife Claire.
This great box set is definitely worth your time and money!
The mid-season debut of KATE & ALLIE'S replacement in the Spring of 1984 starring Susan Saint James as Kate McArdle and Jane Curtain as Allie Lowell was both a critical and commercial success. The shoulder pads, clunky answering machine, and hairdon'ts give away the decade, but the storylines of grown-up best friends supporting and, at times, sparring with each other during personal and professional crises are timeless.
Curtain and Saint James share a wonderful chemistry that makes them easy to watch. At the start of this 6-year sitcom, viewers are introduced to Allie's first post-divorce date, played by a dashing young Kelsey Grammer from CHEERS & FRASIER.
Almost 2 decades before the gals on SEX & THE CITY began tackling relationships, Kate summed it up best: "Dating's about finding someone so you never have to date again." By the time CBS cancelled KATE & ALLIE in the Spring of 1989, Kate and Allie's relationship had gotten a little hackneyed & stale and it was time for the ladies to move on. But those first few seasons were fast, funny, and full of possibilities since the show was still in its honeymoon phase, but perhaps the whole cast & crew of the show was getting tired & the show was running out of steam.
