Book Description

Jun 30 2010
A tanker steaming through the deep Northwest Providence Channel of the Bahamas comes across a shocking sight: a lone dinghy carrying Captain Julian Harvey and the body of a young girl. They are all that remain of the ketch Bluebelle, a handsome sixty-foot sailing yacht chartered by the Duperrault family of Green Bay, Wisconsin. But their happy family vacation went terribly wrong when, according to Harvey, a violent and unexpected squall smashed the giant main mast, killed Harvey's wife and the others, and sank the boat. Harvey found the child floating dead and, as far as he knows, he is the only survivor. Or is he?Four days later, just as Captain Harvey is testifying at a Coast Guard hearing about the tragic accident, amazing news of another survivor arrives. Eleven-year-old Terry Jo Duperrault has been found barely alive on a flimsy cork-and-canvas float with no food or water. Harvey takes the news calmly, finishes his testimony, and leaves...to commit bloody suicide. This is the chillingly detailed inside story of what really happened during that trip and the decades-long courage of the sole survivor of a murderous crime.

5.0 out of 5 stars From US Air Force Rescue May 7 2010
By Charles H. Manning - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I flew one of the aircraft, an Hu-16 Albatross in the search for the Bluebelle. Even after Julian Harvey was picked up, we had high hope of recovering others, so the search continued for three days, expanding northward to compensate for the flow of the Gulf Stream. When Tere Jo was picked up by the Greek freighter we were 45 miles away. Naturally, we were all elated but guilt persists to this day, that we may have flown over Tere but missed her in the choppy seas. I have always wondered how that brave young girl continued her life, and now we finally know ! Thanks, Tere Jo

2.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING STORY, DULL BOOK Jun 14 2010
By ireadabookaday - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I had never heard of this incident and after reading a description of the book, looked forward to reading it.
I was quite disappointed. The book is very poorly written, and the real life incident and the real life survivor never come to life on the page. The writing is so dull and disorganized and without drama that reading this book is a chore, and Logan, despite being a psychologist, is unskilled at portraying Fassbender's state of mind at any point in the story.

The book has a very amateurish feel- the whole product feels thrown together. It is hard to say how much writing , if any, was done by Fassbender, but she deserved a more able coauthor. There is a unique story to be told here, but sadly this book fails at making it interesting.

2.0 out of 5 stars There could have been so much more! Jun 20 2010

The story has the makings of an epic. However the execution of it makes one think that the author was essentially very lazy. He seems to have cobbled together some news stories and photos with a few minimalist interviews with the survivor and gotten published, in book form, what is essentially a long magazine article. It is a huge disservice to Ms. Dupperault and she should have been advised either to expand it into a meaningful tale or put it on her shelf at home. It tells almost nothing of the real struggles of adjusting to her losses or how she coped and, apparently, thrived in later life. There is so much wanting here that it leaves one begging for more and feeling cheated at this tease of a book.
