This review is from: Alt- Und Mittelhochdeutsch: Arbeitsbuch Zur Grammatik Der Alteren Deutschen Sprachstufen Und Zur Deutschen Sprachgeschichte (Paperback)
This book (written in modern German, about learning Old High German and/or Middle High German) was very helpful to me in learning the basics of Old High German (OHG) grammar. I had read Wrights's Old High German Primer (19th century, available in public domain) to get started, since the only language in which I am fluent is English. It has much the same information, but Wright not as well organized to help the beginner know where to start.
Alt- und Mittelhochdeutsch Arbeitsbuch is well laid out. Old and Middle High German are separate (I'm interested only in Old at this point), so you can use it for either language. It does not dwell on all the possible variations of everything, but gives the basics in the order in which it is most useful to learn them. There are tables and examples throughout, and a tabular summary at the back which boils down most of what you need to know.
My command of German is limited, but I did not have much trouble reading this book. It is written in straightforward style for clarity. In addition to grammar, it has sections that introduce language history and philology. You would not need to read this material to learn the grammar, but it is helpful, and I found it interesting (and again, clearly enough written for a non-native-German speaker to follow).
Highly recommended if you have at least an intermediate grasp of modern German.
