Book Description

Sept. 16 2008
For twenty years Abe Williston flew all over the world. Now, at the controls of a small airplane owned by Michael Redsky, he was headed back to Kenora, Ontario, returning to close friends he''d left behind as Native culture was being sacrificed on the white man''s altar of bureaucracy. Would there be something to keep him from leaving a second time? The memories of forgotten friendships held no answers. Set in simpler times against the background of Northwestern Ontario's Lake of the Woods, ALTAR and THRONE explores the friendships between Natives and whites, tested by a world turning more complex as cultures collide.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALTAR AND THRONE Nov. 5 2008
By Kevin Trombley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book captured my attention from the opening chapter. Abe Williston came across as an ordinary hardworking guy concerned about his friends, both white and Native. As he flew the skies of Northwestern Ontario in his Norseman floatplane, many times I envisioned myself in the right hand seat, riding with a legend.

Filled with emotion, the writing connected me to characters in a way few books have. All the characters became real people with whom I shared their joys and tragedies. His realistic portrayal of native children brought home to me the richness of their culture

With most of this story set in the 1930' and 40's, I enjoyed the sense of a place set in simpler times, yet connected to the complex issues spanning
both cultures. Short chapters kept me turning the pages as I followed the
Redsky family through Abe's bush pilot days.

Author Ed Zaruk brings out everyday details of the characters lives, in a very exciting way.
The ending was very clever both realistic but interesting & exciting.
