Product Description

From Amazon

The Definitive Guide is known as the Bible of alternative medicine. You may very well want to use a dictionary stand for this hefty tome; it weighs in at more than 1,000 pages. Nearly 400 doctors (M.D.s, Ph.D.s, naturopaths, Doctors of Oriental Medicine, and osteopaths) contribute their cutting-edge knowledge, and the list of names is impressive. You'll find words of advice from Joseph Pizzorno, the president of Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington; C. Norman Shealy, the cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association; Nobel laureate Linus Pauling; Deepak Chopra; and Joan Borysenko, author and director of the Mind-Body Health Sciences in Boulder, Colorado.

After an intriguing, optimistic look at "The Future of Medicine," the book is divided into two sections. The first profiles 43 alternative therapies--acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, qigong, hyperthermia, and yoga among them--including their development, how they work, proven uses, and controversial or yet-to-be-proven uses, along with contact information for organizations. The second section covers 105 topics such as headaches, mental health, and allergies, along with the alternative therapies that are most likely to help alleviate pain and encourage healing. This guide is easy enough to understand to make it perfect for home reference, while it would also make a fine resource for health care providers interesting in learning more about alternative medicine. --Erica Jorgensen --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

"Weighty yet incredibly useful reference for anyone who wants to learn more about alternative medicine therapies." - Cooking Light

"This book could save your life." -Julian Whitaker, M.D.

"If you are interested in alternative medicine of any kind, and want the security of authenticity in this field, you'¬?d better get Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide." -Deepak Chopra, M.D.

"In bookstores nationwide, titles on holistic cures by such authors as Andrew Weil, Dr. Dean Ornish and Christiane Northrop have been selling out for some time. Still, it may come as a surprise that one of the bestsellers in the field has no famous name attached: it's an 1,100-page reference book entitled Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide." -Publishers Weekly

5.0 out of 5 stars Alternative Medicine by the Burton Goldberg Group-Review, Aug 4 2001

This review is from: Alternative Medicine P (Paperback)
I purchased this volume hoping to supplement my existing knowledge of medicine with the alternative protocols. This work is complete as to its coverage of the various diseases and modalities to treat them. When a patient encounters a serious illness, the keyword is protocol. Very often, there are multiple protocols for the same illness and the patient/doctor must sort through this maze. The Burton Goldberg volume helps tremendously in this effort. As people get older, they no longer get diseases that go away overnight. People tend to have conditions that require ongoing maintenance. The combinatorial impact of many different medications taken at the same time can be detrimental to the kidneys. Therefore, the alternative medicine protocols provide a mechanism to address the medicinal issues with substances that the body recognizes organically. In addition, this volume cites the medical experts in the different areas. It describes the biology of the disease processes in a way that is understandable to a novice. This work is a worthy investment for any personal library. People spend money on many frivolous things very often ignoring the future of their health. This work helps to craft a personal health plan/outline for the future by presenting comparative protocols in understandable english.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on alternative medicine, Jan 7 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide (Paperback)
This has to be one of the most useful books on alternative medicine ever published, and now it's been completely updated and revised in 2002. Instead of getting just one doctor's perspective, you get the experiences of over 400 physicians. Whether you want to learn more about acupuncture, applied kinesiology, and other therapies or need to look up the treatments for a particular health problem, this is the book to go to first. Highly recommended!
