Perhaps the most charming movie of all time, Amélie is certainly one of the top 10. The title character (the bashful and impish Audrey Tautou) is a single waitress who decides to help other lonely people fix their lives. Her widowed father yearns to travel but won't, so to inspire the old man she sends his garden gnome on a tour of the world; with whispered gossip, she brings together two cranky regulars at her café; she reverses the doorknobs and reprograms the speed dial of a grocer who's mean to his assistant. Gradually she realizes her own life needs fixing, and a chance meeting leads to her most elaborate stratagem of all. This is a deeply wonderful movie, an illuminating mix of magic and pragmatism. Fans of the director's previous films (Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children) will not be disappointed; newcomers will be delighted. --Bret FetzerSee all Product Description

The problem is that the movie has English subtitles burn-in and I wish I would've known that before making this purchase. If you're looking for the clean french version of this movie, don't get the alliance release of it because you won't be able to remove the english subtitles.
How hard would it have been to get the option to turn them on or off ?
And if this movie doesn't want you to hop on a plane and go to Montmartre in Paris to experience this world of Amelie, then there is no hope for you.
As far as the DVD, it's well worth it for the extras (and fret not, most of the stuff is in English). The "Look of Amelie" shows how precise and prepared the director was and the cinematographer actually steals the show with his explanation of various shots and scenes. There is more--funny outtakes, screen tests (hey, why don't more DVDs thorw those on?), a couple of Q&A's with the cast and crew as well as a nice face-to-face with Jeunet himself.
The entire package is well worth having.
The first time around you fall in love with its story and the artistic eccentricities.
The second time, details make more sense and the puzzle pieces fall together better than they did the first time.
The third time, with a keen eye and ear, you start to notice little visual symbols and musical cues that hold the movie together and make it a legitimately artistic film--and quite a bit more.
It is fundamentally a love story, cute, but which offers so much more than the average Hollywood picture so that the senses are always dazzled. There is magic here--magic that is convincing and heartfelt. There is humour. There is originality. There is also character. Amélie is a film that deserves a spot in your movie collection.
The reason I was getting this was for the French commentary by Jeunet, and because it is, of course, a film I greatly enjoy. However, because of the subs which are forced, I would consider this a MAJOR pass!
It is a beautiful and sweet story. The story made me feel like a 14 year old falling in love. I am not going to go over the plot - I am going to talk about feelings. I felt light - as if a weight had been taken off my shoulders. My eyes got misty. That hasn't happened for the last 20 years. I was left with a smile and I went to sleep peacefully. This is a MUST WATCH!!
