The director's cut of Amadeus finally accords this masterful work the DVD treatment it deserves. The handsome anamorphic widescreen picture is accompanied by a choice of Dolby 5.1 or Dolby stereo sound options, and it's all contained on one side of the disc. Director Milos Forman and writer Peter Shaffer provide a chatty though sporadic commentary, but they're obviously still too mesmerized by the movie to do much more than offer the odd anecdote. The second disc contains an excellent new hour-long "making of" documentary, with contributions from Forman, Shaffer, Sir Neville Marriner, and all the main actors, taking in the scriptwriting, choice of music, casting, and problems involved in filming in Communist Czechoslovakia with half the crew and extras working for the Secret Police. --Mark Walker

Rivetting!,

This review is from: Amadeus (Widescreen, Special Edition, Director's Cut, 2 Discs) (DVD)
Amadeus was rivetting! The story was fascinating and the whole vibe of this movie was truly sensational. The acting was brilliant. Murray F. Abraham deserved his award for his truly magnificent portrayal of Salieri and Tom Hulce's performance of Mozart was excellent. The music was beautiful. For me, this movie took my complete focus and for two hours it was as though you were totally immersed in the story line yourself it brought that much attention to its audience. Milos Forman should be proud of this one. It's worth the investment of your time to see this performance.

The Best of 1984,
By
This review is from: Amadeus (Widescreen, Special Edition, Director's Cut, 2 Discs) (DVD)
More like 4.75 stars but not quite 5 stars. 1984 was a very good but not great year for movies. Most of the popular movies (Starman, Beverly Hils Cop, Splash) are now remembered for their distinctly 80's feel and are seen more as nostalgic time capsules than genuinely good movies. All of the Oscar nominees for best picture deserved to be nominated but only Amadeus deserved to win. It is the closest anything from that year comes to being an instant classic. Lushly produced, extremely well acted, compelling and boasting a great (albeit fictional) villian. Very rarely does the bad guy get to tell his side of the story. One could easily argue the villian is really a real life representation of Mozart's inner demons and thus, Mozart was his own worst enemy. Come for the music, stay for the show.
