Product Description

From Amazon.com

The stunning documentary Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony tells the story of protest music in South Africa--but as it does so, it tells the story of the struggle against apartheid itself, for the music and the revolution are inseparable. Through archival footage and interviews with musicians, freedom fighters, and even members of the former government police, Amandla! creates a vivid and powerful portrait of how music was crucial not only to communicating a political message beyond words, but also to the resistance itself--how songs bonded communities, buoyed resistance in the face of bullets and tear gas, and sowed fear in the ruling elite. Part history, part musical exploration, part sheer force of life, Amandla! captures both the sorrow and the triumph of life in South Africa from the 1950s to 1990, when Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress came into power. --Bret Fetzer

(REAL NAME)
This video brings back so many memories of the South African peoples struggle for freedom. The music is so fantastically good that I have spent a whole day hunting down a number of the artists on the WWW. The video and accompanying music are so emotional - have your hankie ready.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy Amandla together with Sarafina, May 22 2004
By
My suggestion is that you enjoyed Sarafina, buy Amandla to learn more about the songs and dances of protest in apartheid era South Africa.

While Sarafina was a musical, Amandla more of a documentary, and goes into much more detail of the history and origin of the songs. Commentators will discuss the songs in a round table kind of setting, and then you see examples of the songs. There's also a good section covering the origin of the 'toyi-toyi' dance step, which is prominent in the climax of Sarafina.

At the same time, I don't see this as a useful video in learning the history of apartheid or even South Africa, as no mention is made at all of Coloureds and Asians, who also live in South Africa and were subordinated under apartheid, albeit less than Blacks. Rather, Amandla succeeds as a history of the songs of protest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must see, April 15 2004
By A Customer
This DVD is incredible. The music of the apartheid is the best vehicle for telling what happened in this era. Music is such a part of the daily life of Africans which makes this DVD all the more impactful. It should be seen by every person alive.
