The Kindle Experience

Reads Like Real Paper, No Glare Even in Bright Sunlight

Kindle uses an electronic ink screen that looks and reads like real paper. The matte screen reflects light like ordinary paper and uses no backlighting, so you can read as easily in bright sunlight as in your living room. Unlike tablet screens, Kindle has no glare.

Lighter, More Compact Than Ever

Less than 6 ounces (170 grams), Kindle is lighter than most paperback books, and weighs half as much as many tablets, making it easy and comfortable to hold in one hand for extended periods of time.

One Month Battery Life

Kindle also has the advantage of significantly lower power consumption than tablets. Kindle does not require power to maintain a page of text, allowing you to read for up to a month on a single charge, with wireless off and a half hour of reading per day, versus hours on a tablet or smart phone.

Sharp, Clear Text

Kindle uses actual ink particles and proprietary, hand-built fonts to create crisp, print-like text similar to what you see in a physical book. The screen's 100% aperture ratio means no gaps between pixels. The blacks and whites on the screen are uniform, improving image quality.

Easy on the Eyes

Every time your eyes switch from a bright screen to a dimmer, ambient room, your eyes have to adjust, which may result in fatigue. With Kindle the page is the same brightness as everything else in the room so there's no adjustment needed.

Read in Any Position

When you read for long periods of time, you often switch positions to get more comfortable. Kindle has a uniform contrast ratio that does not change with your viewing angle, so you can read in any position.

Massive Selection

Over one million books, including best sellers from the Globe and Mail and Le Devoir best seller lists, winners of the Giller prize, and a broad selection of works from leading Canadian authors and publishers.

Adjustable Text Sizes, Font Choices

Kindle has eight adjustable font sizes to suit your reading preference. You can increase the text size of your favourite book with the push of a button. If your eyes tire, simply increase the font size and continue reading comfortably. Kindle also has three font styles to choose from - all optimized and hand-tuned to provide the best reading experience.

Custom Fonts

Kindle uses hand-built, custom fonts and font-hinting to make words and letters more crisp, clear, and natural-looking. Font hints are instructions, written as code, that control points on a font character's line, improving legibility at small font sizes where few pixels are available. Hinting is a mix of aesthetic judgments and complicated technical strategies. We've designed our proprietary font-hinting to optimise specifically for the special characteristics of electronic ink.

Support for Non-Latin Characters

Kindle supports the display of non-Latin characters, so you can read books and documents in the translation that's right for you. Kindle displays Cyrillic (such as Russian), Japanese, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), and Korean characters, in addition to Latin and Greek scripts.

Real Page Numbers

We match the pages of a Kindle book to the text in a print book to identify the corresponding "real" page number. Easily reference and cite passages or read alongside others in a book club or class.

Precise 5-Way Controller

Kindle has an easy-to-use 5-way controller, enabling precise on-screen navigation for selecting text to highlight or looking up words. No on-screen fingerprints.

Fast Page Turns

Kindle's powerful processor is tuned for fast, seamless page turns.

Our Whispersync technology synchronizes your last page read, bookmarks and annotations across your devices so you can always pick up where you left off.

We automatically back up your library in the cloud, so you never need to worry about losing your books. Re-download wirelessly anytime for free.

Search Wikipedia and the Web

Kindle makes it easy to find what you're looking for. Just enter a word or phrase and Kindle will search every instance across your Kindle library, in the Kindle Store, on Wikipedia, or the Web using Google search.

Built-In Dictionary with Instant Lookup

Come across a word you don't know? Kindle includes a dictionary with over 250,000 English entries and definitions for free. Kindle lets you instantly look up the definition without ever leaving the book - simply select the word with the cursor and the definition will automatically display at the bottom of the screen.

And because it is digital, you can edit, delete, and export your notes. You can highlight and clip key passages and bookmark pages for future use. You'll never need to bookmark your last place in the book, because Kindle remembers for you and always opens to the last page you read.

5.0 out of 5 stars E-Reader Superhero! Mar 15 2013
Amazon Verified Purchase
Firstly I would like to commend the customer service representatives...excellent customer service! I felt taken care of and listened to...all of my concerns were addressed and they were friendly and informative. Hats off to them.

Secondly, my 2nd Generation Keyboard Kindle had untimely demise...it fell out of my hand and onto the pavement...I called the Amazon Customer Service line and because it was outside of my warranty period they could not fix it but offered me a variety of options to replace it at a discounted price. I appreciated that but could not afford at the time to replace it. My sister-in-law had recently acquired a tablet and offered me her e-reader (I call it a Bozo, I am sure you can figure out which one it is) and I thought this would be a sufficient replacement for my Kindle. Boy was I wrong. The Kindle is a far superior product in so many ways I do not want to list them all but I do want to highlight two significant requirements for me...one is battery life and the second it how quickly the page refreshes (turns) when you come to the end of it. The "Bozo" is terrible in both regards...3 day battery life and I was constantly waiting for the page to turn...small but important things like that make a difference.

I re-ordered my Kindle months later (the initial offer still remained) and I am so much happier for it. I love reading and I find that I have read more books in one year on a Kindle then I did in a 3 year period with paperback/hardcover books.

The convenience of the Kindle is wonderful and I would highly recommend it to anybody considering any of the e-reader products out there. Just forego the search and get a Kindle already! This is the best, bar none. Plus they have an amazing selection of books and their customer service has set the bar of excellence in my opinion.

Enjoy your Kindle you will not regret it.

BTW - if there was more stars to give I would have given them!

2.0 out of 5 stars No Canadian library compatability Mar 2 2013
By Lynne TOP 500 REVIEWER
I have just received a basic Kindle ereader and, after opening it & trying it out, have learned NO KINDLES ARE COMPATIBLE WITH CANADIAN LIBRARIES. They can be used only with U.S. libraries.

This is shocking to me. I have searched through the advertisements on Amazon to see if this is mentioned - even briefly - anywhere, and cannot find any information on this sad fact...a fact which was confirmed by my local library.

C'mon Amazon: get with the program! I will probably return my Kindle, as the main reason I wanted it was to download library books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the current generation Jan 26 2013
By M. Yakiwchuk TOP 100 REVIEWER
Before owning this Kindle, my first ebook reader was the Kindle Keyboard. I really liked the Keyboard, and upgrading to a new Kindle was a very difficult decision. The first thing I noticed after unboxing the new Kindle is its light weight and spectacular display. Reading the product specifications, I wasn't sure I would be able to tell the difference from my Kindle Keyboard, which also uses the eInk Pearl display technology. However, I find the new display whiter and the new hand-tuned fonts easier to read than on the Kindle Keyboard.

In terms of weight and size, I am blown away by how thin and how light the new Kindle is. Amazon wisely preserved the physical buttons on this version of the Kindle which makes turning pages easier and more natural than a finicky touch-screen. Also, you don't have to worry about leaving fingerprints on the glass (an important consideration as I regularly moisturize).

Amazon fixed several of the issues that bugged me with the Kindle Keyboard. Specifically:

- Using the dictionary precisely preserves your reading location. With the Kindle Keyboard, the page formatting always changed if I looked up a full definition in the built-in dictionary. Words always got shifted up or down following the search With the 6th Generation Kindle, page formatting is exactly as I left it before the word look-up. This preserves that idea that I am reading a book, and not a constantly evolving manuscript or draft. How would you like it if you put down your paper book to look up a word in the dictionary and found the pages altered? I don't like it, and I'm glad Amazon made this change to make ebooks more like paper books.

- A French dictionary is now built-in, so you can look up words without having to leave the book you are reading.

- Page refreshes. With the Kindle Keyboard, every page must be refreshed. As a result, I learned to time my blinks with this page refresh to avoid eye strain. With the new Kindle, I have it set (this is the default setting) to do a full page refresh only when required. This means fewer page refreshes, and a reading experience that's easier on the eyes. Having read about 300 pages of my book on the new Kindle, I like the new refresh system better.

- The keyboard. While I didn't mind the keyboard on the Kindle Keyboard, I used it only infrequently. The lack of a keyboard was one of my biggest worries with this Kindle... until I used it. The on-screen keyboard is very snappy, probably owing to improved processing and memory performance on the new Kindle. Typing words is easier than expected, thanks to a unique keyboard layout. I'm still surprised that a keyboard layout that is not QWERTY could be so intuitive and useful, yet it is. Despite having used a QWERTY keyboard all my life, I have latched on to the new keyboard layout right away. In a nutshell, Amazon has made it easier to type words, and you spend less time looking for letters. Commonly used letters are located centrally so you don't have to scroll far to find them. Well done!

Overall, I am very happy with my decision to buy the base model Kindle rather than one of the other more expensive models currently available. For one thing, I have never found this device lacking: It has 2GB memory, a better display, and a sprightly user interface compared with my old Kindle Keyboard. Also, Amazon preserved the main screen layout and simplified the settings screen (Airplane Mode, for instance, can be turned off with a single button press). Also, I like the 4-way controller for navigation.

All-in-all, the new Kindle is a perfect example of "less is more", and it's just plain fun to use. Whether you are new to ebook readers or have owned one before, if you love books you will love the new Kindle. Recommended.
