Backstory Thriller,

It is hard to believe that this is the eleventh Mitch Rapp outing. Author Flynn keeps the franchise going with a back story plot that establishes the action hero's early days. It allows him to provide context and the motivations that made Rapp who he is. The best parts take place during his early training but stretches credibility a bit given Rapp has no military background. It then moves to his early assignments (and kills). The most enjoyable character is Stan Hurley, a grizzled Cold Warrior, who throws the best literal and verbal punches in the book. In terms of historic accuracy, the author credits the CIA a bit too much in recognizing the Islamic extremist threat ahead of actual events.

Great timing - the birth of Mitch Rapp,

I have read all of Vince Flynn's works about Mitch Rapp and this was definitely an essential add in - where did Mitch originate from and how was he brought up to the machine he now is. We learn Mitch's mindset on why he joined and the tutelage he received from those with wisdom - Stan Hurley.The story starts with Irene Kennedy recruiting Mitch from the real world instead of from one of the Military Services, like the rest of the selection recruits. She brings him into the program, behind the back of Stan Hurley, a crusty training expert. Once on ground Mitch establishes a stage with Hurley that is not pleasant, but ultimately leads to a solid bond. Mitch is what they wanted and more. Hurley eats crow and knocks heads with his superiors over the selection. Mitch has god given talent and improves in areas that are essential in his line of work such as marksmanship. This book gives a great basis for the forerunners in the other novels - who was Thomas Stansfield (a very wise sage), up and comer Irene Kennedy, the crusty Stan Hurley and Lewis the psychologist. Mitch starts out for revenge but turns to retribution - is there a difference? Mitch finds out. This is necessary read for those that have been following the exploits of Mitch Rapp. It is the origination and development of what Mitch ultimately becomes. I think Vince Flynn did a fantastic job on its placement in the series - nicely timed. Worth the purchase.

I just want to say this was the most fun I've had reading a book in a long time. I could not put it down. If you have liked any of the first few Mitch Rapp novels. You will love this book!
