Review

Garden books come and go each year, but the American Horticultural Society's "New Encyclopedia of Gardening Techniques" (Mitchell Beazley, $45) is essential to any gardener, newbie and green-thumbed alike.

Weighing in at more than 4 1/2 pounds, this indispensable work is the latest book from the national gardening association (ahs.org) that dates to 1922. The book offers more than 2,000 illustrations and 200 color photos covering everything from the nuts and bolts of soil makeup and digging techniques to weed control, compost piles, containers, growing edibles, water gardening and garden design. What sets it apart, however, is its focus on earth-friendly, organic gardening practices.

Although it's geared to all regions of the country -- you'll find citrus trees discussed, for instance -- this hefty reference book is intended as a general resource on a multitude of gardening topics, one that will whet your appetite for more as you delve into it this winter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book for the Newbie Gardener, Oct 26 2010
By V Blak - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: American Horticultural Society New Encyclopedia of Gardening Techniques (Hardcover)
I am completely new to gardening at the ripe old age of 42. Yes, I have waited 42 years to start figuring out just how plants grow and what the heck do they need. More importantly, how do I even being to start to garden? How do seeds grow, how do I plant trees, what plants grow where, how much water do they need, why didn't my seed germinate and so on. Like any newbie I have a million questions and that is exactly what this book is all about. It's like the google of gardening but in a book with illustrations. I love it. I love it so much I am about to post about it on gliving.com where I am documenting my first gardening attempt.

You can't go wrong with this book. This is an up to date modern book with a fresh feel to it. It's not one of those re-hashed gardening books filled with old photos from gardening magazines or old gardening books. This is feel like it was create especially for the modern urban gardener, which I am guessing is probably someone like you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Reference, Dec 17 2009
By Matthew M. Cohen "Author,Garden Watering a Ze... - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: American Horticultural Society New Encyclopedia of Gardening Techniques (Hardcover)
The New Encyclopedia is a must have reference. It really is not expensive. some of it overlaps the 1st Edition and some present. Both books together begin to reach the long out of date Horticulture. This book is practical and with suggestions for different plant zones across the climate while at the same time taking the time to remind the reader about micro-climates eg under Shade or acidity of soil. I've used it sufficiently that I do not have to go to the 1st edition very much. But the best reference. Matt Cohen Zen of Watering Your Garden
