Phillip Phillips' EP of highlights from American Idol Season 11 is as sweet as it is short. "Hold onto me as we go, as we roll down some familiar road," Phillips croons as "Home" opens. The arrangement builds as instruments are added and great background vocals climax, "Settle down, it'll all be clear; Don't pay no mind to the demons, they fill you with fear." What a delightful track. I do have "O," the Damian Rice CD where "Volcano" first appeared. Phillips inhabits the song completely so that he surpasses the original, making the track sound profound, "Don't hold yourself like that cause you'll hurt your knees; I kissed your mouth and back, that's all I need." Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight" almost seemed schmaltzy with Seger's gravelly voice rescuing the song into a hit. Phillips makes the song seem incredibly intimate and sincere, "Deep in my soul I've been so lonely, all of my hopes fading away; I've longed for love like everyone else does; I know I'll keep searching even after today." Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" blazes wonderfully. While there is not much here, the tracks are indeed memorable. This short EP is a glorious introduction to what fans hope is a long and storied career. Enjoy!
